Read Grant’s memoirs. He was a very good writer, and the story is enjoyable. It only takes a few hours to read.

Grant wrote them as he was dying from throat cancer so his wife would have money. They were published by Mark Twain.

And Grant succeeded. His two-volume autobiography was a best seller and made his family a great deal of money.

I have one volume of the original set from the 1880’s in mint condition. I will eventually find it’s companion volume.

At the time there was no presidential pension and no Secret Service protection.

That came later.
