A group of 16 Republican senators are sending Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a serious message Friday: It is time to work full weeks, confirm the presidents nominees and stop wasting precious time while Republicans hold both chambers of Congress and the White House.
Sen. David Perdue of Georgia is leading the charge, calling on McConnell to realize there are only 67 working days left in the 2018 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30. The coalition of Republican senators are urging McConnell to make the Senate work through Friday and on some weekends (senators typically go home to their districts on Thursday afternoon) and cancel the August recess a request newer GOP senators and the president asked of leadership in 2017 in order to get action on repealing and replacing Obamacare.
Action is exactly what Perdue and his colleagues want. They want more time in session to confirm the presidents nominees. They want more time in session to get must-pass appropriations bills out of committee and onto the Senate floor for a vote. They are tired of the slow walking pace and dont want to waste another day when they are in the majority.
Effectively, they want a change in the way the Senate is currently running, which they view as sluggish and increasingly subject to obstruction from Democrats.
The White House is on their side as well. White House legislative affairs director Marc Short told reporters at the Capitol Tuesday that the administration would support a delay in the August recess and more time in the Senate because it is their duty to the American people.
If we reach August and we still have not completed appropriations work or not confirmed our nominees, then of course we would like to see the Congress stay here and do its work, Short said. Its about getting the job done for voters across the country.
The president urged members of Congress to delay the August recess in early July 2017. McConnell responded to President Donald Trumps request with an announcement that he would shorten the recess by two weeks to give lawmakers ample time to come to an agreement on the best way to reform health care. The delay in recess only lasted one week, but senators who requested it point to the fact that it helped the chamber confirm nearly 80 of the presidents nominees.
Time for the overpaid politicos to quit loafing and enjoying their lives of luxury and get to work.
Congress needs to be decentralized. With today's technology, there's no reason for them to be in Wash, DC.
McConnell has his orders from his corporate donors.
He’ll follow those.
The Turtleman wants to know....Whats in it for China and the Chamber of Commerce?
Not all Rs are worthless!
McConnell is the head of the Washington cesspool that needs to be drained.
But their POS leadership is from McTurtle to Lyin Ryan!
“Congress needs to be decentralized. With today’s technology, there’s no reason for them to be in Wash, DC.”
I’ve maintained that theory for a long time. They need to stay in their districts, AVAILABLE to the people they represent; in the environment of the area they represent.
They could convene in DC once or twice a year, that should be enough.
There would be (I think) fewer “under the table” deals, less bickering, and less straying from their campaign promises by having to answer to their constituents, locally.
It would present quite a challenge for those over paid lobbyists, as well.
Do it!
Beat me to it. China Mitch has his priorities. Sometimes (sic) they don't line up with the peoples' priorities.
McConnell doesn’t want a conservative flavored judiciary across the country any more than the Ds do. He is as guilty of doing the ‘slow-walking’ thing as the libs.
After the November election....I think there will be five new GOP Senators showing up, with three replacements for Corker, McCain and ‘snowflake’ (McCain’s twin in AZ).
Somewhere in this mix....I think McConnell might have some problems in getting Senate lead in January, and there might be some shift in leadership. He comes up for election in 2020....it’s time to go find some former quarterback or sports figure from Kentucky, and help fund them to run against Turtle in primary.
I think it's more like:
How is the family Chicom shipping fleet doing?
He might want to spend some time getting rid of that 30-hour debate rule that the dims use to slow up the process.

This is really McConnell’s moment. If he even THREATENS to hold the Senate in session, you’ll see Trump’s judges and nominees start flying through, as even the threatened Democrats DO NOT want to be stuck in that chamber, while their opponents are blasting them non-stop at home.
It’s up to McConnell now...we shall see.
Part of why they dont work is because they are mostly OLD!!! Most of them are in their late 70s!!
Not all Senators are worthless, but I have a hard time getting into double digits...and having an R after the name doesn’t mean much. McCain, for example...how has he been any better than a Kennedy would have been? Flake, McConnell, Graham...need I go on?
MCWA to MAGA!
McConnell is opposed to the Trump agenda, for open borders and big government, but most focused on his own power.
Sending him a “serious letter” means nothing.
Who are the 16 Senators ?
YES...I’ve said the same for a long time. Technology today means they can VOTE from ANYWHERE!
And, I’m hoping President Trump starts encouraging this.
GOP is a waste of time...only hope is primarily the RINOS..but it really never happens
