The VC very well might have. Though the NVA determined he had too much propaganda value.

Wow-the Lt Gen. threw down some shade on Songbird.
He won’t be invited to the funeral either.

Water boarding does no lasting physical harm.

It is mental. It scares the target.

It’s about time someone told the true story. McCain could have avoided this disgrace had he kept his mouth shut and stayed off the stage when he returned after the war, but he just couldn’t do it.

Everybody talks eventually. The problem with torture as a method of gathering information is that when the person breaks their primary motive is to end the torture, so they say what they think you want to hear, which might or might not be the truth. Relationship building takes longer, but you get better info.

If it is the truth, I doubt McCain had to hear McInery say it to know it, and know it WILL be on his mind as he meets his maker (”father forgive me for my weaknesses that betrayed my comrades”).

The WaPo is trying to make this a “poor cancer John” story but the point McInerney was making is a VERY GOOD ONE! The idea that democrats and undocumented democrat McCain ALWAYS put forward is “torture doesn’t work,” but this belies a complete ignorance of spycraft and how high-level intelligence work is run. It’s now a FACT - no matter what Obama or McCain say - that waterboarding KSM and enhanced interrogation on Bin Laden’s courier worked. KSM gave us information not in his answers but BY WHAT LIES HE TOLD INVESTIGATORS - who already knew they were lies - to try to throw them off the trail. In this way, they knew which leads to pursue specifically because he didn’t mention them. The same thing worked with Bin Laden’s courier. The fact that he tried to steer this interrogators AWAY from Pakistan and the complex he was in is what led them to figure out that Bin Laden and his family were, indeed, there.

In spycraft you have to listen to EVERYTHING, especially the lies. I don’t know if McCain was a songbird or not. Some on this board will swear it’s the truth but I DO KNOW that he was not adequately prepared or sophisticated enough to know what NOT to tell the Viet Cong as a trained intelligence professional would have been.

The whole stupid line of questioning was kabuki theater to any real intelligence professional.

"As PolitiFact has noted, there’s no evidence for the claim that McCain betrayed his country in captivity."

Define "no", as in "no evidence", Erik Wemple.

Search videos under "John McCain Hanoi Hilton", or "John McCain POW" or "Vietnam Veterans against John McCain" for starters.

What makes you say he shouldn’t have said it? Would McCain EVER hold his tongue against Trump or another republican?

Are there any POWs who witnessed his being tortured at all?////

According to COL Hackworth who looked into it, no. Hack wrote a column stating all we know about POW juan are his accounts. No corroboration.

Google Hackworth.

The US senate is a debating society. The CIA is an intelligence service and a damn good one. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/11284721/CIA-torture-report-enhanced-interrogation-helped-us-catch-Osama-bin-Laden.html
