Citing its opposition to "unilateral moves", the leftist Meretz faction will not attend next week's festive opening ceremony for the US Embassy in Jerusalem.
"I really want to see all the embassies in Jerusalem, and I want to see Jerusalem recognized by the world as the capital of Israel within recognized and safe borders. I want to see Jerusalem recognized by the world as the capital of Israel," Meretz Chairman Tamar Zandberg told the IDC Herzliya Conference on Thursday.
"We simply can not celebrate unilateral moves whose potential for danger is so significant. "
According to Zandberg, "Past experience shows us that unilateral steps do not remove an issue from the table, but on the contrary, complicate it further, and while Jerusalem is the capital of Israel is an undeniable fact, peace is not."
The embassy will be inaugurated on May 14 and will include a US delegation led by Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan, and will include US Ambassador to Israel David M. Friedman, Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin, and US Special Representative Jason Greenblatt.

Who?
or even better... Who cares?
Israel’s Liberal/Progressive/Socialist Deep State.
Most leftard party in Israel. To them, Stalin and Castro were reactionaries.
Well that will certainly help them in future elections /s
Leftists. There’s nobody they are not smarter than. Nobody has greater moral clarity. Nobody can define reality in such articulate terms.
“We simply can not celebrate unilateral moves whose potential for danger is so significant. “
Israel didn’t make a place for itself in the world by collectively crapping its pants.
They might re-name themselves the Sus Met party (dead horse party), ‘cause they have no hope of ever even being invited into a coalition.
The Balfour Declaration was a “unilateral move’ by the British cabinet in the face of the crumbling Ottoman Empire. I suspect that deep down if not openly this is castigated as imperialist by the left wing.
They won’t greet the opening of the US (their most staunch ally) Embassy, but methinks there is someone else they will greet with open arms in the not too distant future.
Of course it was imperialist. That was a time of imperialism, and the British Empire was rewarding its Jewish allies, Chaim Weitzman, The Jewish Brigades, etc., by awarding them a homeland under British protection, for their substantial help in taking apart the Ottoman Empire. Unfortunately, a clique of pan-Arabists within the military and the British Foreign Office began undermining the Balfour Declaration almost the moment that the League of Nations ratified it.
I could argue that Russia’s presence in Syria is imperialist, too, and it is. But somehow it’s only immoral when Britain or America does it. China can do no wrong, and Russia can only do wrong after they renounce Communism, and even then only sometimes.
