Oliver North, the controversial retired Marine and former Reagan White House aide implicated in the Iran-Contra scandal, is on track to be the next president of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
The organization on Monday announced that North will replace Pete Brownell in the role within a few weeks.
The head of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre, called the appointment the most exciting news for our members since Charlton Heston became President of our Association.
Heston served as the groups president from 1998 to 2003, famously shouting, From my cold, dead hands as he held a rifle aloft during the NRA convention in 2000.
Oliver North is a legendary warrior for American freedom, a gifted communicator and skilled leader," LaPierre said in a statement. "In these times, I can think of no one better suited to serve as our President."
North is stepping down from his position as a commentator on Fox News effective immediately, the NRA said. He will take over the gun rights group as soon as his business affairs [are] put in order, it added.
In a letter to the NRAs board of directors expressing his support of the pick, Brownell said that LaPierre recommended reaching out to North, referring to him as a warrior amongst our board members.
Wayne and I feel that in these extraordinary times, a leader with his history as a communicator and resolute defender of the Second Amendment is precisely what the NRA needs, Brownell wrote.
Brownell will not serve a second term as president of the group so that he can devote his full time and energy to his family business, he said.
NRA spokeswoman and conservative commentator Dana Loesch also expressed support on Monday for North, saying on Twitter that he is the last person that anti-gun advocates would want as

I’d have loved to have seen him in the Senate.
As you know, he ran back in ‘94 and came oh so close to winning.
We could not have a better man!
A big thank you to Nancy Reagan for sabotaging his campaign with a blistering non-endoresment. Oliver North was gracious in not firing back at her.
Missed that one. What was that all about? (I think next to Bush as VP as Reagan's biggest mistake, maybe next was Nancy.)
The perfect man for the job.
I first joined NRA when Charlton Heston was President. I’m excited about this choice.
I hope he publicly changes our battle cry from “From my cold, dead hands” to “Molon labe” or “we will give them to you one full metal jacketed bullet at a time, you stinking commies”.
Read it and tremble lefty losers.
Cool! Go Ollie!
I am not a lefty but this sucks. North is not just controversial, he’s a disgraced Marine, scum. His actions hurt Reagan, hurt the US, soiled the Marines. He lost every campaign since. He is a political hack. As a life member of NRA, this bothers me. Enough to terminate my membership? Maybe.
Outstanding!
Repeating what I said on the other thread:
A lot of the gun folks I know arent pleased with this.
How is North a better NRA president than Pete Brownell -a 100% gun guy?
The Libs will flashback to Iran-Contra ‘86 and totally freak out. Senate fossils like Dianne Feinstein have old scores to settle. This could get interesting.
Let’s recall that LTC North is a decorated Vietnam veteran with two Purple Hearts.
Oliver North was openly sabotaged by the GOP running an "independent". You can thank RINO John Warner Senator Elizabeth Taylor for that. I've never seen so much virtue signaling in my life. Gag me with a spoon. Liz Taylor was a "beard" for that old fag. I wonder if that old SOB is dead yet?
Sabotaged by the RINO’s with a third candidate of their type as I recall.
You have to love how the leftard started her article. She ramps up her disdain before even touching on the prestigious history of the NRA or it’s important contribution to civil rights. After repeatedly touching on the code words “Iran-Contra”; I’m sure she just ran out of room. Perhaps she should have included that little tantrum of Bush 41 when he left the NRA...
Damn, how I miss the old days of Zotting trolls.
