Once upon a time in New York City, Sherman Jackson lived at the glittering heights of public life in a privileged place of bold-faced names and media stars.
For a time, he appeared on TV sets citywide as a newsman at NBC. Later he appeared on-air as a press secretary for some of the biggest politicians in the city.
The schools chancellor. The parks commissioner. Mayoral candidate Herman Badillo. He stood in front of cameras and parried with reporters, shaping the narrative of the city itself.
From the 1970s into 2000, Jackson’s quotes appeared in every newspaper in town. In the pre-internet era, he was interviewed countless times on radio and TV.
He carried an impressive address book filed with the private numbers of big name politicians who relied on his advice. He spoke with the authority of a major player, a savvy insider.
And then it all went south.
Things happened. Situations changed. Life, as it sometimes does, took a turn, and Jackson came to realize that for some of us, everything you think you will have forever suddenly isn’t there anymore.
And so on Friday, Jackson, now 70 years old, awoke once again in a big open dormitory room along with 24 other men, a resident of a city-run homeless shelter hard by the entrance to the BQE.
This is his ninth month in a shelter, and he has not yet found a way out. Last week when a Daily News reporter asked him if he ever thought he would be where he is now, he could not find the necessary words to answer.

Yes, he made a great living so seems there was enough to put by for a rainy day.

Indeed he learned the hard way liberals never give they only take.
The guy sounds like a LIB bum. He is experiencing the result of years of bad decisions...ongoing bad decisions. Oh, well.
Agree hope the young understand it.
I would think that some of those jobs he had paid well. Did it not ever occur to him that he would someday be 70 and not able to work? Should have put some by when times were good.
Plus, how many of his cushy jobs was he awarded because he’s half Hispanic?
He seems to make very bad decisions for someone who no doubt considered himself part of the intelligentsia.
From all that was reported about what income he does have, he is only homeless because he lives in New York City and is not grandfathered into a legally-mandated-to-remain-cheap “rent controlled” apartment for himself. He could move to lots of different places in the country and on what income he has would not need to be homeless.
I have sympathy for the guy but my advice to him is get out of New York.
I remember this guy and feel bad for him. I’m sure he’s quite vulnerable where he is. But you have to wonder about a man who can’t live with his son, his sister, and whom nobody from the old days seems willing to try and help.
Now, perhaps I am wrong about my surmise, but it makes me think there is some other issue here, perhaps some mental instability on his part. I would certainly think that Rudy or SOMEBODY could find a place for this old colleague of theirs to live.
