Having visited China several times (first visit 1980,most recent visit 2015) what strikes me about my most recent visit is that you can see glass and steel buildings and traffic jams in central Guangzhou and then travel 10 miles south and find people living like so many in Africa do (I've seen *that* as well).

China,IMO,is a country of a few thousand millionaires,a few hundred billionaires and about 1.2 billion people living the same lives as their ancestors of 1,500 years ago.

I think the official statistic some years back was around 350,000,000 living the high life or US middle class equivalent. But that’s just a drop in the bucket population-wise in China.

Did you know anything about the laws governing rural born Chinese going to the city for work?

I had read somewhere that they have almost no rights in the city; that on leaving a job they must leave the city unless they find other work, and so on.

If you could fill in, it would be interesting as most seem to think in China there is no difference between rural and city born.
