Hind D vs Stinger. ANd to be 'realistic, they are going toned more than a onesie, twosie approach...
I see some awesome skydiving opportunities coming out of these flying machines.
In Syria, the current mark Hinds and Hips are shrugging off MANPADS fire. There’s multiple videos up on YouTube of Islamists launching surface to air missiles at them, clearly scoring hits - and the Russian helis just ignore it and keep flying.
The Soviet expedition into Afghanistan was more than 20 years ago. Ivan learned a few things from it and has had plenty of time to work out how to prevent it happening again.
Here’s one of a modern Hip directly eating a SAM and ignoring it.

The disappointment and depression in the Islamists’ voices when the Russian helicopter refuses to acknowledge the missile is priceless.
We had Mi-24 Hind, Mi-8/17 Hip, Mi-2 Hoplite, Ka-29 Helix, and the An-2 Colt down at Ft Polk.
I’ve personally flown on both the Hind and Hip while supporting the 509th.
If its good—use it—if we like it—copy it. Russians make some good stuff and a lot of crap. Maybe we can improve the Hind?
Intel guys at Ft Irwin took us through a short seminar an SovBlock weapons they had on hand. They had some armor that was used in OpFor for a short while.
Had to retire them to a petting zoo. No way to get the parts to keep them running, so the fake mockup shapes took the field.
Dunno how a helo is to keep flying vs. a track to keep rolling, but the consequences of a parts failure are easy to see between the two.
No hit, no harm. I get that.
Stinger hits, Hind dies.

A Stinger isn’t a POS SA-7/Strela-2. The SA 2 warhead is 2.6 lbs.
The Stinger system warhead is 6.6 lbs. In this case, size matters.
To be fair, when the SA7 *hits*, it will knock down a HIND

They just want to see more of them up close.
And so do I.
It’s just a flare!! You ok Lance?
Turkey has provided Stingers to the Syrian rebels. They have been used against Russian heavy choppers to no avail. The SU-25 Frogfoot isn’t as heavily armored as modern Russian heavy choppers and it’s been the one eating Stingers and falling out of the sky lately.
Your second video is an Igla taking out a Russian-made Kamov light or medium helicopter, not one of the heavies.
Your first video is from the Sri Lankan conflict. Sri Lanka flies *old* 1976-era Hind-E-but-gimped-for-export Mi-24V’s and some similarly gimped Hind-Fs. Same tech and type that flew in Afghanistan when the Soviets were there, not the improved current versions.
Also, that first video I linked was a direct hit. The second is what you get even from a Stinger if it fails to make a skin to skin hit - it detonates and the idea is that the rods from the annular blast frag warhead will shred the chopper and its rotor. Neither happened here; and yes, that’s what the Stinger does.
Ask the guy upthread who flew them, but the Russian helos are reputed to be simple and relatively easy to maintain, relatively low maintenance and very rugged beasts. Lots of parts on the world market for Hinds and Hips, too. The Hip is literally the most numerous commercial helicopter in the world and the Hind is based on the Hip.
Basically, it’s the Ford Mustang of rotorcraft.
I love the an-2 colt as well.
About ten years ago, someone was flying the An-2 biplane into our little New England airport. It's a very big plane making very impressive sounds.
I also read of WWII Marines in SW Pacific islands identifying enemy aircraft by their sound.
'Not a bad idea to expose our troops to this identifying technique.
A Russian once told me if you can get it in the door it will get it in the air.Just like our ole C-47.
The real deal was used in the film, they also recorded and used the sound of actual rounds being fired. Very effective and intimidating weapons platform.
So why didn’t we learn from their losses before we allowed our SEALs and their support to fly together on a Chinook in Extortion 17????
IMO it kinda sounded like the old A-1 Skyraider.
