There were reports of a hostage situation and a man with bombs inside the home, although that wasn't immediately confirmed. Neighbors also reported shaking following the blast.

We dont know if she is safe right now, but we believe she is. That was really the flash point on what happened here today," North Havens First Selectmen Michael Freda said. "Apparently there was a very very serious domestic dispute and it manifested itself to this explosion you saw here a few minutes ago.
It was not immediately known if any children were inside the home, Freda said.
Firefighters worked to get the flames under control more than an hour later. State police said they were assisting in the investigation.
Freda said authorities suspect the property's barn was "rigged to explode," the Hartford Courant reported.
It sounds almost like it was a booby trap type of explosion, Freda said. Based on the way the explosions took place, from what police told me, there was a series of explosions, which may indicate some sort of rigged booby traps.

North Haven really, really has no problem with either Muslims or Meth labs. It’s a relatively wealthy town. It has a bad section, it has an industrial section, but for the most part about 99% of Americans couldn’t afford to live there.
Meth Lab
This is a little over a mile from my house. I drive by the place everyday on my way to work.
Last night there were two cop car in front of the house when I went by at 4:40PM, but I didn’t think anything of it at the time. When I was coming home at 9:45, it was like a war zone. Never saw so many cops and firemen in this town. My husband and the kid felt the explosion. Thought something had hit the house.
Guy who owns the house had his wife file for divorce two weeks ago. He held her hostage and beat her up pretty bad. She got out and went to the police station yesterday about 2PM. That’s why the cops were at the house went I went by later in the afternoon.
Guy barricaded himself in the barn behind his house. When the cops started to move in, looks like he had a booby trap and set it off. Fire burned for hours. Smoke made it to our neighborhood.
Never saw anything like this round these parts before.
Looks like they just found the husband's body in the barn that blew up. So the wife doesn't have to go through with the divorce. But she doesn't get a house either.
At least she got out with her life. I used to live in North Haven and then Wallingford. Both very nice towns.
I also live nearby and work for the local EMS agency. My work partner yesterday was on a 16 hour double and had to be back at 4 AM today. He lives very close to the scene and didn’t get his 5 hours sleep last night. Poor guy. Glad all the officers are on the mend. And yes, the local news is confirming a body was found in the barn.
Very much an anomaly for this area!
And I don’t think home insurance will cover deliberate destruction by the home owner.
I feel for the EMS folks. I was shocked when I got off of 91 last night and was trying to go down Qunnipiac Ave to get home. I go down that street almost everyday and outside of an occasional driver getting a ticket or fender bender, there’s never much excitement. I’ve lived in North Haven all my life and I never saw activity like that before.
Thanks to all of you folks who take care of the rest of us.
The husband used to run a plumbing business. Mr Kitty and I are hypothesizing about how he could have blown the place up.
If he keeps acetylene for his business, that would do it in a confined space. Propane or natural gas would do it too, actually.
That’s along the line of what we were thinking. Hazmat on the scene when I went by on my way home a little while ago. Will be interesting to see what the cause actually was.
