Less than a third of British adults are opposed to U.S. President Donald J. Trump visiting the UK, and more back the trip than those who are against it. In an ICM poll conducted for The Guardian newspaper, people were asked simply if they supported or opposed the visit.
One third, or 33 per cent, said they supported it and 31 per cent said they were opposed to it. Another 33 per cent said they neither supported nor opposed the visit.
The poll also uncovered some interesting tribal differences, with Tories and Brexit supporters more likely to back the Trump visit than ‘Remain’ voters and Labour Party supporters.
More than twice as many people who voted to stay in the European Union (EU) in 2016 were opposed to the trip than those who voted for Brexit, with 44 per cent ‘Remainers’ against it compared to 18 per cent of ‘Leavers’.
Furthermore, a majority of those intending to vote Conservative, or 53 per cent, support the visit, compared to only 1 in 5 Labour voters, or 21 per cent.
Numerous polls have shown that Brits largely back President Trump’s visit, including one in February that showed a “plurality” supporting the trip – six per cent more than those who opposed.
Despite the public support, politicians and activists have been largely derogatory about the President, encouraging protests and even claiming they will be some of the largest in the UK’s history.
The Speaker of the House of Commons promised to ban President Trump from Parliament and London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan has compared him to terrorists and fascists, as well as claiming he is “not welcome” in the capital.

If the Brits are not very, very, very careful, they are going to witness anti-British anger such as they have not seen since 1812.
Americans love Great Britain. They have deep affection and respect for the British Royal Family. President Trump, whose mother was from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, has expressed these same sentiments and has said that his mother held deep affection for the Royal Family. However, all that could change in an instant! if the Brits show contempt for the American People and President Trump, and alienate the very Americans who love and respect them the most!

I completely agree. Yes, Americans hold the British as something very special, unfortunately most Americans have never been to Britain and those that have are usually there to do the tourist things. Most Americans have never felt the contempt that most Brits have for us.
Most Americans believe that we still have the relationship and friendship that existed after WWII. Our view of the British is romanticized, but in actuality the warm relationship hasn’t existed for many decades.
Speaking for myself, they lost me many years ago and now I do not give a rat’s behind what happens to them. My advice to others is go back through recent history and look at any controversial issues, Britain always stands with the opposition against us.
To taste British contempt for America without crossing the pond, do the following:
1. Google “America love affair guns”.
2. Look for cites from UK newspapers such as the Guardian with titles that scream “What’s with these Yanks and their bloody love affair with guns!!!?”
3. After reading the article about “lax gun laws” and “Rambo wannabes”, scroll down to reader comments.
4. Feel the hair on your head start to curl. There is real hatred for Americans in `this earth, this realm, this England’.
I have been to Britain many times, and I hold the British people and the UK in high esteem, respect, and affection; however, if the Brits go down the dark path that insults to President Trump and the American People indicate, they could quickly lose me and the vast majority of Americans and convert love to contempt, friendship to enmity, admiration to disrespect and end the Trans-Atlantic Alliance.
I don’t think anyone could have been a bigger anglophile than I was. I inhaled their history and often thought has there ever been a greater people?
Some people have called the internet a curse and in keeping with that, I joined many British sites rather than American sites. I went from site to site looking for pro-America and American there are less pro and many anti-American sites.
I was I could un-read some of the things I read. Parliament’s debate was the last straw for me.
I have done so and it is brutal.
Their favorite is to bring up WWII and tell us that we arrived late just to grab the glory which we don’t deserve as we and our incompetent military did nothing but mess everything up.
The real “heroes” of WWII were the Brits and the Russians just ask any Brit.
Even their “conservatives” despise us.
I’m sorry but that’s just utter nonsense.
The fact is we made a stand first against Hitler and unquestionable Americas involvement was decisive in the war, as was perhaps mistakes by the Germans.
So a few loudmouths joust with Americans about them coming late to the party - so what. Grow some thicker skin.
I speak as a conservative that LOVES America and its President.
My skin is already two feet thick growing only after visiting in person and spending years on British sites.

For many of us, British history is our history, at least to a time when our ancestors chose to emigrate and then we made our own history. Watching what is technically a part of our heritage be destroyed by an invader is kind of hard to take.
When the British are harder on an American president while welcoming despots and dictators then we know something has got to change in this relationship. We are tolerated when they need something abused when they don’t.

As for calling you moronic - I don’t know how well educated or well travelled you are, but your line of reasoning sadly paints a very bleak picture of that. I have met many great people on FR, rock solid American loving patriots and the overwhelming consensus is a love for the UK. In fact I get private message from people all the time.
I don’t like people insulting my country, a country that has given the world so so much, and I would have thought we share that in common.
Generally speaking, Brits love Americans and Americans love the Brits. That isn’t gonna change even if you want to sit there being a hater. On that basis, I can sleep very well.
