The Liverpool hospital, where the toddler's life support was turned off on Monday, said: "All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family"
Alder Hey Hospital has expressed its "heartfelt sympathy" to Alfie Evans's devastated parents after the toddler died in the early hours of today.
The Liverpool-based hospital, where little Alfie's life support was turned off on Monday night, posted a statement on its website this morning.
It said: "We wish to express our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Alfie's family at this extremely distressing time. All of us feel deeply for Alfie, Kate, Tom and his whole family and our thoughts are with them.
"This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected."
The 23-month-old, who was being treated at Alder Hey, died at 2.30am, five days after his life support was withdrawn.
Alfie's mum Kate James posted this heartbreaking message on Facebook today
In an emotional post on Facebook, his dad Tom Evans and mum Kate James announced: "Our baby boy grew his wings tonight at 2:30 am. We are heart broken. Thankyou everyone for all your support."
In a separate post, Tom, 21, wrote: "My gladiator lay down his shield and gained his wings at 02:30... absolutely heartbroken. I LOVE YOU MY GUY."
The couple, both from Liverpool, had fought to take Alfie to a foreign hospital for treatment, but lost a final court appeal on Wednesday.
Doctors had removed the little boy's life support on Monday following a High Court judge's ruling, however he continued to live.
The toddler left medics "gobsmacked" by breathing for himself, according to his dad, who said he was "comfortable" off the ventilator.

Police hold the line outside the entrance of Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool
“Sorry we killed your son!”
Makes a great Hallmark Card.
Even better card would be sorry we wouldn’t allow you as parents to exercise every option you had available to save your son, but our reputation was more important than your son.
Adding insult to injury.
Heck, it also has that Orwellian touch to it.
Kinda like a murderer showing up at the victim’s funeral to express condolences.
Yet another death to chalk up to socialism, but at least you managed to save the reputation of the NHS yet again.
Has anyone noticed that we in the West are getting numb to stories like this? What does that say about us?

This is like getting a sympathy card from a concentration camp.
Hope the sue the Sh!t out of them and NHS too.
I guess “heartfelt” doesn’t interfere with their bottom line or fascist patient control policies...
They could add Bill Cosby’s voice to a talking card from “Alder Hey Hey Hey Hospital”......sarc
The juxtaposition of a week where the Royal couple had a new baby and this tragedy playing out is true irony and points up to why we never want the government to be involved in our healthcare.
They were going to take him to Italy. Question to freepers, I have not read anything about any American hospitals reaching out. Were any American hospitals offering to try to treat him and is there any medical experts out there who knows if he was truly un-treatable and having no hope?
Hospital chiefs said :
“Our staff have received in person, via phone calls, email, and through social media channels a barrage of highly abusive and threatening language and behaviour that has shocked us all.”
Meet God’s newest little saint.....I was never blessed with children but that image brings me to tears. Those eyes are filled with a will to live.
So...British police were there to thwart any attempts at rescue. Beyond disgusting in what was once a God fearing nation.
“Behold, God is not mocked......”
The numbness goes all the way to the top with silence from DJT’s Twitter account unlike Charlie Gard’s case last year.
The liberal craves baby murder.
When the government is paying, it decides.
I wouldn’t want to say anything nasty to you folks at the hospital but I would like my government to ban you all from entering the United States since your government bans people from my country entering the United Kingdom on the basis of their speech.
At least we could ban you on the basis of your actions which makes more sense to me.
regarding the twitter account, such a trivial world event does not merit Presidential involvement
