Dragging out his departure from the Senate actually has a practical purpose. If he resigned before now they’d have a special election to replace him. If he waits until early May — after the six-month point before Election Day in November — then the AZ governor appoints a replacement to serve until November when an election is held to get someone to serve the remainder of his term.
Why would we want to let the voters decide? /s
You are correct...this waiting until May is to ensure that a special election does not occur. The governor, in my humble opinion....will likely pick himself (just my hunch), and will get enough time to prove he’s the better GOP choice.
One of our Congress people was kept on life support so she died after anyone could challenge her. So we elected a dead person on the ballot.
I did not know that and much appreciate the information.
But were circumstances to require that McCain be replaced,
that person would have to be a Republican, as McCain is, and
would serve until the next general election, which happens
every two years in Arizona. Whoever was elected would then
fill out the rest of McCain’s term, according to state law.
That is a good point.
BTTT! I didn’t know that fact, Thank You for stating it!
It’s May tomorrow.
Any ideas who might be a good candidate to replace McCain?
