Im a mother, a veteran, a black American and a Christian. People who dont know me often make a lot of assumptions about who I am. For example, many assume that because Im black, I must be a Democrat. But they would be wrong.
Yes, Im black. But no, Im not a Democrat.
When I tell people this, it elicits a lot of confusion and anger. First and foremost, its seen as a betrayal to the black community. I lost almost all of my black friends during the 2016 election campaign.
Take it from me, theres no room for independent thought in much of the black community. Black conservatives are seen as unicorns and the backlash we get from the more tolerant liberal community is often swift and cruel. Were often deemed not black enough.
When she was first lady in 2014, Michelle Obama said on TV One, a predominately black television channel: Its not about the person on that ballot its about you. And for most of the people were talking to, a Democratic ticket is the clear ticket that we should be voting on regardless of who said what or did this, that shouldnt even come into the equation.
Meaning that if youre black, you must vote Democratic. Dont ask questions. Just fall in line and do what youre told. To me, this is offensive. My vote is worth fighting over.
But it reminded me that not all overseers on slave plantations were white. There were black overseers as well. They were called drivers and their job was the same as the white overseer to keep black folks in line.

No its still a very safe assumption to assume a black person is a democrat. The few anomalies do not override the common sense overwhelming number of black democrats.
People get surprised when they hear a minority isn’t Democrat.
And then they get angry when they don’t the party line.
No wonder so many of them stay in the closet.
Its like all you people look alike.
And therefore all you people all think alike.
Its dehumanizing.
You mean like when they say “you white people”...
I disagree.
Statistically speaking given voter demographics, you would be an idiot to assume she’s not a democrat.
Her point is you’re not treating as an individual.
Forget the demographics; human beings aren’t a herd of mindless animals.
Trump has supporters all over and not because of identity politics.
I leave that to the Democrats.
Maybe someday we can actually judge someone on the content of their character and not the co,or of their skin.
You do realize that she herself, is making an assumption about us.
You dont seem to be bothered by that.
Excellent.
It’s good that she is speaking up.
I hope people, including colored people, listen and think about it.
Kanye has a history of being a nutcase.
Do not be surprised when he is shown the error of his ways and is herded back on to the plantation.
Just my 2 cents.
What assumption?
Democrats make assumptions about blacks and use them to get votes.
They don’t care about their problems or fixing them because they take their loyalty for granted.
As long blacks remain a captive Democratic voting bloc, no one will ever take them seriously.
Leftist power to shame is considerable.
And its the rare person who successfully defies it.
This doesn’t mean that the GOP has the answers either. The historic wellness of America is due to President Trump. Republican Congress/Senate and the GOP overall is MIA.
Yeah, really
Wouldnt that be great?
The shame is not anything that the normals see as shame.
It is being accused of lack of loyalty to the group.
Yup. That’s why black conservatives stay in the closet.
The cost of expressing yourself is too high when people around you don’t acknowledge your right to be different.
Back in 2008 when I was still riding a city bus I overheard two young black women (maybe early 20s) discussing the recent election. One girl was proud that BO was just elected. The other one said with disdain that she didn’t vote for him because she didn’t like him. No one was going to make her feel like a lesser sister or member of their community. Not all blacks walk in lockstep.
Maybe Kanye should be encouraged to stay the course instead of reminded of his previous shortcomings?
“Maybe Kanye should be encouraged to stay the course instead of reminded of his previous shortcomings?”
Do you see anything like that coming from the black/entertainment community?
I don’t.
