WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that aims to reduce the federal governments role in K-12 education.
Trump is giving Education Secretary Betsy DeVos just short of a year 300 days to identify areas where Washington has overstepped its legal authority in education, and modify and repeal regulations and guidance from her department, if necessary. A report will be returned to the White House and eventually made public, officials said.
Trump complained that the government over the years has forced states and schools to comply with federal whims. He said the order will help restore local control over education.

Thank You Greatly, President Trump.
This is great if true
Great! Of course, the Dept of Ed should be disbanded, as Reagan promised but did not do. I think if DJT is re-elected, we will see him do this (and a whole lot more) in his second term.
Time will tell.
Goodbye era of phony conservatism.
Hello era of Trump.
Brick by brick
This is a good first step. Primary education was once the purview of local school boards and states, as well it should be. Now it is mostly dictated by lawyers, judges and the Feds, but who or what runs the feral government but lawyers and crooked judges?
Wean to win...
Thank you for your explanation. My wife is a retired teacher - Master teacher. One of our daughters is a Charter school principal and we have a granddaughter who now teaches in the Beaverton, Oregon school district and another granddaughter in college pursuing a degree in Education. While I am somewhat familiar with school’s respective financing, my point is that there is TOO MUCH federal government in our schools. Too many unfunded federal mandates are a problem. National required indoctrination subjects - LBGT promotion, being federally required to show 14 year old kids pornography in class, etc. takes away from the education mandate of the schools AND takes away from other, more important, subjects - the founding of our country, US history, world history ( how did the mideast become what it is today), etc. We now teach our kids WHAT to learn rather than how to learn. We give them the answers rather than have them reason out the answers. We reward them with credit for attending “demonstrations” we favor and suspend them for attending demonstrations we do not favor. Too much indoctrination, too much government, not enough education.
The curriculum is STRAIGHT FROM UNESCO

‘Bout time.
Return education to the states, the feds running things ie education is unconstitutional.
That should fix the dumbing down of our children
Or, at least exempt from school taxes those who home-school or send their kids to private/parochial schools.
Public education is nothing but legalized and institutionalized child abuse. And every adult who participates or facilitates the system should be strung from a lamppost.
Just abolish the federal control, not limit it
From the reply you posted: ... in some cases, these students dont have no English speaking capability;

Don’t have no English speaking capability?????
I hope the person who wrote that reply to you isn’t teaching ESL classes.
I think the entire reply was something written by a person in the NEA (union) and was meant to justify the massive bloating of public school funding.
Was watching the local news on TV, huge banner below the reporters announcing "Cobsky guilty!". Journalists can't spell, editors can't edit. And Bill Cosby is not Russian.
Good posting, A10. Saving this as more evidence why the DOE should be vastly reduced or eliminated.

I agree. Nothing in the overblown write-up talked about advanced or even intermediate academics - it was all about free handouts and babysitting. Too much liberalism.
i taught for one semester. I decided that wasting my life doing something in which i was forced to be ineffective was stealing from taxpayers.
Typical.
A great, but depressing, post. Too sadly true. Thats why control of education was high on Alinskys plan.
Yes it is insane but those classes do not exist in public school, unless it is Continuing education or one of the really special, Special Ed classes.
