SACRAMENTO The Golden State Killer raped and murdered victims all across the state of California in an era before Google searches and social media, a time when the police relied on shoe leather, not cellphone records or big data.
But it was technology that got him. The suspect, Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested by the police on Tuesday. Investigators accuse him of committing more than 50 rapes and 12 murders.
Investigators used DNA from crime scenes and plugged that genetic profile into a commercial online genealogy database. They found distant relatives of Mr. DeAngelos and traced their DNA to him.

The Zodiac killer hasn’t been caught yet has he?
Glad they caught the guy.
Not glad that Big Brother has gotten too big for his britches.
“Those who are living legal and healthy lives have nothing to worry about as their lives should be lived as an open book. “
See the movie The Circle and get back to us.
Just ask those intelligent and unbiased OJ jurors
“Nothing like a for-profit DNA compilation service disguised as a way to discover more about ones past.”
Yeah, that little piece of info made me swear out loud.
Frightening.
.
“One of my bros is into this stuff and has done a lot of DNA triangulating to make connections .”
That seems to be exactly what happened.
All they needed was three relatives and they nailed him.
I suspect we are seeing the future of DNA detective work.
Third Cousin Earl, Great Aunt Sally and the nephew you have submit their DNA to 23 and Me and the next thing you know, you are doing 23 to life. (Not You, but some criminal)
If you’re looking for family, it might be the only way to find them.
As for crime, the first thing police already check for is DNA evidence. Fingerprints and physical evidence are not that helpful.
Like it or not, this is the matching technology of the future.
The 4th Amendment does not mention 23 and Me.
Nothing like a for-profit DNA compilation service disguised as a way to discover more about ones past. Am I right?

If youve committed a crime, havent been caught and may have left DNA evidence behind then you should threaten all your relatives. Tell them that if they submit their DNA, you will kill them and their children.
See, problem solved.
“came from”
I read the white paper on that subject for one of the testing companies. They basically run correlation against a database of “known” people. Those self identifying as being native to a country to include parents and grandparents.
So your surmise is correct - there is no national genetic marker, e.g. a french-gene. It’s pretty much racial and when checking out their own work, they admit in the white paper that the best results are quite regional, such as northern vs southern europe.
The most interesting thing they found was that it was notoriously difficult to find correlation for french and german areas. The belief is that that is due to that region being somewhat of a mixing bowl for europe.
So the ancestral dna bit is cute, but not really that useful. You’ll get better info doing your own genealogical research.
No, but suspect DNA was supposedly sent to FBI lab months ago.
“If youve committed a crime, havent been caught and may have left DNA evidence behind then you should threaten all your relatives...”
And when the coroner takes your relatives’ DNA and detectives find your DNA at the murder scenes, you are going to get executed in 40 years.
I think that many of you don’t really understand the technology involved and the mathematical odds against getting a false match.
DNA is really, really complex and getting the precise combination is literally millions to one against it.
I am very pleased that they caught that slimeball - it’s just tragic that it took so long.
I’ve tried to explain Big Brother is watching these services to people (and FReepers) time and time again. They fail to grasp the ramifications. Sure, fine, it’s great the guy was caught but why would any sane person pay Big Brother to take their DNA identity?
Do they have his DNA?
If so then they will probably find him, dead or alive.
Technology is great, however it is unable to eliminate human error.
Here's some light and heavy for you:
OJ Simpson agrees with you.
Thats one of my favorite shows!
Satire right?
Exactly.
