Eurofighter doubts U.S. will use nuclear certification to tilt German jets bid

BERLIN (Reuters) - The head of Eurofighter on Wednesday said he did not expect the United States to slow certification of the European fighter’s ability to carry nuclear weapons as a way to influence a competition to replace Germany’s aging 90 Tornado jets.

The Eurofighter is a joint project between British defense group BAE, European airplane maker Airbus and Italy’s Leonardo.

Airbus and Eurofighter on Tuesday submitted six binders of information to the German defense ministry, which has said it will prioritize a European fighter, but has also asked for information about the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jet and Boeing Co’s F-15E and F/A-18E/F jets.

Germany hosts some U.S. nuclear warheads under NATO’s nuclear-sharing policy and maintains a fleet of Tornado fighter jets capable of delivering them. It faces a pressing requirement to replace the jets which are due to retire in the middle of the next decade, as well as a longer-term need to replace its existing Eurofighter combat jets.

F-35 backers say that aircraft is already slated to have the nuclear capability in the early 2020s, while the Eurofighter would still need certification. Airbus says it is confident Eurofighter could get certification by 2025, when Germany wants to start phasing out its Tornado fleet.

But U.S. government sources say that schedule is ambitious given that other aircraft, including the F-35, must be certified first.

Volker Paltzo, chief executive of Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH, told reporters at the ILA Berlin Air Show that U.S. certification was required, but said he was confident Eurofighter could take over the roles of the Tornado.

“This is a subject where we would not expect the U.S. to leverage over Eurofighter in this competition,” he said.

What is involved with this certification? PAL link control mostly I would think, otherwise a nuke is just a heavy chunk of ordnance with demanding delivery methods.

The F-4 Phantom mostly had an additional small control panel and a unique connector for the centerline station. So, wiring and a box.

We are way past the time when we should allow jets from any European nation to carry our atomic bombs. That’s a relic from the 1960s. It’s just a waste of money.

And we might as well make the nuclear break with them soon. They are falling deeper into the clutches of islam by the day.

Every system on the aircraft must be tested as to how they may interact with each other and how they could impact safety and operation of the systems installed to control the special weapons. No input or output may be able to make any effect on the arming, fuzing, or firing system within or external to the weapon.

This testing is very extensive and requires total design review and physical testing of every system in the aircraft as well as all the ground support equipment and takes a lot of time and money.

The B-1B bomber was decertified and there were certain people asking about returning it to use as a special weapons carrier but the time and cost for testing is so prohibitive that the topic was dropped.

I spend about 1/2 my time in Europe on business, have done so for decades. There is zero islamization that I observe. I rarely travel to England or France so can not speak to the situation there. In Northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Czech, & Former Yugoslsvia there is little creeping islamation.

There seems to be a constant pattern of these articles on FR, it’s all just hysterical fake news as far as I can see.

They added millons in the last few years. And they are breeding like flies.
But in any case. What is the -necessity- for a German or Italian plane to carry an American nuke? They bring nothing to the equation that we need. No skills, no money, and they would only complicate the command and control in an actual nuclear war.

And yes, the Brits are very islamicized as are the French, Belgians, Swedes and Germans.

They will run the place in 20 years thanks to Merkel.

Thanks DesertRhino. Can’t understand vouch, ignoring the widely reported horrors in Sweden, Germany, France, and lack of government response.
And inconsistent, saying first, “There is zero islamization” then “there is little creeping islamation”.

Don't spend as much time in Europe but my experience is exactly the opposite.

I'm stunned a how Muslims are steadily increasing in population and influence the ground.

Middle Eastern oil states have bought up significant enough quantities of EU assets that they have strong influence and often a controlling interest in strategic EU assets.

BTW, have heard people say exactly the same thing about the impact of the massive influx of Mexican illegal immigrants into California over the last 30 years.

California's evolution into Mexifornia was just hysterical, false fear mongering by racist whites who were afraid of losing their dominant position

you must think muslims are lurking under every bed.

You do realize that 30-40% of Levantines are Christian ?

I am troubled by the fact that 98% of the “ refugees” entering the EU are military age Muslim men, especially when they are coming from home countries that are 40-80% Christian or non Muslim

In fact, I find the fact that the only common characteristic defining the massive influx of “ migrants” from countries all over the globe is that they are 95 % + Muslim

Sorry Charlie but most Syrians I spoke to at the Munich train station ( I used it to commute to -from a sister plant ) during the tsunami of refugees in 2015

1) appeared to be middle class merchant types or other types of professionals
2) lots and lots of women and children
3) many christians
4) all spoke basic english

Latest Bavarian crime stats just were published - down sharply.

As you also may not have heard - more than 1/2 of those refugees are being deported.

it’s a non issue except to scare monger some paranoia
