Israel May Strike Russian Systems In Syria After Threats Of ‘Catastrophic Consequences’

As we seem to be inching ever closer to World War 3, heated rhetoric and threats between nations are becoming everyday occurrences. Israel has threatened to strike Russian systems in Syria after it was threatened with “catastrophic consequences” if it does.

Russia will send advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missiles to Bashar al-Assad, officials said Monday, warning Israel not to attack the new air defense systems or suffer “catastrophic consequences.” But Israel, in turn, threatened to strike those very systems anyway. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Tuesday that Israel may strike the Russian-made S-300 anti-aircraft defense systems in Syria if they are used against Israel, according to Haaretz.

As of now, all of the threats appear to be nothing more than heated rhetoric as neither side has made a move to actually strike the other. “One thing should be clear – if someone fires on our planes, we will destroy them,” Lieberman said in an interview with the Israeli website Ynet. “What’s important to us is that the weapons defense systems that the Russians transfer to Syria are not used against us. If they are used against us, we will act against them.”

Lieberman’s comments come a day after senior Russian officials told the Kommersant newspaper that Russia is expected to provide Assad’s government with S-300 anti-aircraft defense systems very soon. If Israel attacks the new air defense systems, then it will suffer “catastrophic consequences,” the officials said. The S-300 PMU-2 “Favorite” version of the anti-aircraft systems will be provided to the Syrians for free and very soon, the Kommersant reported.

Lieberman also said that the S-300 are already being operated on Syrian soil...

WisconsinRep :" So Israel wants to start WWIII? "

Not so !
Lets just hope it remains that all of the threats appear to be nothing more than "heated rhetoric",
and political posturing, with neither side taking actions.

In 1982, Israel shot down 79 (then-) advanced Soviet fighters in a single battle without losing a single plane itself. This was due to the far-superior Israeli electronic warfare capabilities. * If anything, Israel’s lead over Russia in this area has expanded since then...and this is in Israel’s back yard and far, far from Russia. I’m sure that the Russians do NOT want to see Israel shred their latest and greatest, as it will not only reveal weaknesses for ALL of Russia’s enemies to exploit, but it’ll cost the Russians a fortune in lost revenue.

* FYI, shortly after that battle, the Soviet General Staff informed the Politburo that “we cannot defeat the West.” Gorbachev was selected as the head of the Party not too long after that, and the decline of the USSR resulted (because you cannot take apart a rigid system and rebuild it in an orderly manner). I was informed of this by Dr. Edward Luttwak, a military strategist who worked for the Reagan Administration, during a class that I was taking with him. He had, many months earlier, described how the Israelis loved our F-15s and F-16s just for their engines and airframes...that they replaced basically everything else because they were not interested in cost savings, but in survival - so they had to have the very best equipment for the tip of their spear.

I'm reminded of the P-51 Mustang in WW2:

Israel?

There is absolutely no justification for Russia to transfer SA 300’s to Syria — none. There are exceedingly few actors around Syria with air capabilities sophisticated enough to warrant an SA 300 defense system.

What is likely going on in reality is that Russia is transferring this sophisticated defensive system for the expressed purposes of protecting Iranian assets. As I’m certain you know, Israel recently destroyed a strategic Iranian drone factory and killed a dozen or so highly skilled technicians and military personnel. This action on the part of Israel followed the incursion of an Iranian drone into Israeli airspace. The drone, a replica of the US drone lost a couple of years ago, was crudely armed with explosives and was meant as a terrorize Israel.

Iran was furious and yet Israel told Iran they will continue to destroy such Iranian assets on Syria, which is designed to menace and directly threaten Israel.

Israel has long and loudly said they will not accept such Iranian interference at their doorstep. The transfer of the SA 300 system to Assad is actually for Iran’s benefit.

The bottom line, Israel like us is working for a sunni government to take over Syria. This is why Israel never attacks ISIS or jihadi rebels, and why these same rebels never attack them.

Love Israel, but their interest is not automatically ours.

Of course there is a reason. Israeli and Nato/US forces are constantly attacking the Syrian government side in support of the rebels. If you fly CAS for the jihadis, it’s childish to expect your victim not to try to defend themselves.
