Hate messages flood wrong Pa. golf course after 'racial' incident makes national headlines

The story of five black women who were asked to leave a York County golf course for reportedly playing too slowly is making headlines and causing outrage across the country.

The group of regular golfers said they were confronted at the second hole by Steve Chronister, one of the owners of the Grandview Golf Course and a former county commissioner, who accused them of lagging and offered to refund their money if they would leave. They were the only African Americans or all-female groups on the course in Dover Township, according to Sandra Thompson, who posted a detailed account of her experience on her Facebook page.

After the 9th hole, another owner called police on them, she said, noting they had been asked three times to leave.

Thompson wrote on Facebook that they felt were being discriminating against.

"As we waited and as we spoke to police," she wrote, "no other group approached Hole 10 to tee off, so for about 20-30 minutes there was no one behind the group who were behind us."

The owners of the Grandview Golf Course in York weren't available on Tuesday for comment. The voicemail box for the business was full.

Another owner issued an apology to Thompson and invited them back to play, Thompson wrote on Facebook.

The incident has attracted the attention of celebrities, including musician John Legend, who Tweeted about the incident.

"Please stop calling the police on black people who are just trying to live," he wrote as he retweeted a link to the news story.

As the story has gone viral, some people have heaped abuse upon a different golf course in in Pennsylvania unfortunate enough to have a similar name.

The Grandview Golf Club in North Braddock has been deflecting outraged comments on social media all day Tuesday intended for the Grandview Golf Course in York.

It didn't help matters when Newsweek picked up the story and the writer identified the wrong golf course, erroneously saying that the course in Braddock was the "oldest golf club in York County." But the course in Braddock is in Allegheny County. Newsweek later ran a correction.

The general manager for the golf club near Pittsburgh said he received several hundred angry emails and up to 400 phone calls intended for the "other" Grandview course.

"We've been getting pretty beat up today," said Tom Beeler, of the mix-up. "We've been called racists and bigots and people have threatened to do bad things, including burning down our golf course."

Beeler had been at a golf tournament Monday so he was unaware of the news breaking out of the York area after the York Daily Record first published an account of the incident with videos.

Emails and voicemails started arriving about 8:30 p.m. Monday night, Beeler said.

"We couldn't figure out what was going on," he said.

Beeler had to turn his phone off (his desk phone automatically forwards to his cell phone) to try to get a few hours of sleep Monday night.

On Tuesday morning, he directed staff members to try to get the word out that they were not affiliated in any way with the Grandview Golf Course in York. They put a note on their Twitter account and website:

"There have been some instances of people confusing our course with the York, PA Grandview course that is currently being accused of racism in the news. We are in NO way shape or form affiliated or connected to that course. Here at Grand View, we pride ourselves on treating all our golfers with kindness, respect, and courtesy. Please do not attack us on Facebook, Twitter, Google, or any other platform as we are NOT that course."

Angry people also have written negative reviews for the wrong golf course on several websites, Yelp posted a message on its page Tuesday to note that it was going to "clean up" reviews that seemed prompted by the news coverage.

"We've had phone calls of people just screaming at us," Beeler said. "They won't even pause to let us explain that we're not the one, that they called the wrong place."

The former county commissioner who is part of the management of the golf course has always been known for having as much diplomacy and tact as a f@rt in a sauna.

He was disowned by the GOP when he publicly endorsed Tom Wolf for PA Governor. He then tried to run as an independent and garnered less than 5% of the vote.

The leading complainant is a perennial candidate for Judge who has been rated "unqualified" or "not yet qualified" by the York County Bar Association. This isn't the first time that she has played the race card and it won't be the last.

As Shakespeare said, "a plague on both your houses".

Liberals are perpetually outraged.

Then again - what else is new?

Its all Trump’s fault.

For black female golfers being booted off a golf course he doesn’t even own.

Pity the wrong golf course accused of wayccism!

In most ways, that media is very antisocial.

Isn’t a group which is playing too slowly rude to the other golfers?

Somebody threatened to ‘burn down the golf course!”.
How does one ‘burn down’ an open patch of land?

Well, if she “felt” there was discrimination - then it MUST be true!

As Dr. Ben Carson once said: “When all your life you’ve had special treatment, being treated fairly seems like discrimination.”. Very true.

Not only that, outraged callers won’t listen to explanations that they were the wrong golf course.

It was coincidence they shared the same name as the offending golf course.

Same name, different counties. Its sad but not surprising to see the SJW types rush to conclusions.

That’s the effect of our over-sensitized, racism-seeking, judgmental PC culture.

Should be fun watching these Einsteins attempt to burn down the water hazards.

Five is a pretty large group to get behind. I'm familiar with the problem as my group tended to be slower; we started on kids' day which more seasoned golfers knew and we let a lot of faster people play through. That was days of walking the course for almost everyone.

I was never "kicked" off the course but perhaps should have been for losing my temper a few times and damaging the fairway (not a green).

Whatever happened, it sounds like the manager made a terrible blunder especially wth black people. He could have pursued other options like maybe asking them nicely to play in groups of 4 and odd person assigned to another groupl

Sometimes we had to get assigned to "short" groups when we paid our greens fees.

I hope the injured party can be somewhat understanding and not exploit their victimhood to the hilt.

Like Prince's heirs are currently doing. Six of them. A week before his final overdose, his plane made an emergency landing at Moline Airport, took him to Trinity. He was given 2 doses of something for an overdose. Sounds like they saved his life.

They wanted to admit him and word is that he insisted on an entire floor. The hospital offered him a private room and recommended he remain for treatment. He declined and flew back to MN.

I don't know what the involvement of Walgreens the hospital pharmacy was.

How such suits seem to work, find the deepest pockets and sue. Then the hospital and other party have to figure what it would cost their attorneys to defend the suit.

So they offer a settlement and maybe sweeten it up a bit rather than gamble that a jury would side in their favor and they have to pay the amount sued for plus court costs and legal fees of the suing parties' attorneys.

Nasty business. Someone will likely advise, if not already, the aggrieved girls to sue the deepest pockets.

Which has me wondering if you own anything of value, you arrange your affairs to protect yourself from deep-pockets vampires and frivolous lawsuits. LLC is one way. It's all gotten so ugly.

I find it ironic liberals idea of reparations is to destroy a golf course.

An apology and sensitivity training is no longer sufficient to make amends.

"Please stop calling the police on black people who are just trying to live,"

That's so ironic. A good thing that this golf course was not in Chicago. Nevertheless, I have a pretty good suspicion that they WERE "lagging". There was zero tact in management and who knows maybe this was racial. I really don't care. I give it that and we now need crisis management to handle protected class people.

I’m starting to see why all those Middle East groups found it so easy to get crowds of citizens screaming “Death To America!!” over and over again. If you leave the thinking to the government or movement leader, it’s a sweet release to choose a scapegoat and pour all your anxieties out on that thing or that group of people. Logical reasoning of the Hate Mob is not required, and is often discouraged. Some people get hooked on the exaggerated expressions of disapproval, thinking it makes them look more virtuous.

A business has the right to refuse to serve any one.

They can eject from their premises.

Of course, you can never do business with them again if they treat you rudely.

That’s different being ejected because of national origin, race or sex which is illegal.

I suspect it was the former and you can tell people not to patronize them if they humiliated you.

Enough bad word of mouth and they will go out of business.
