A Baptist pastor in Dallas is facing some harsh realities more than a year after leading his congregation to affirm homosexuality.

In November 2016, Wilshire Baptist Church voted to extend membership to those involved in the homosexual lifestyle. The church's slogan is now "Open to all, closed to none."

The action prompted the Baptist General Convention of Texas to sever ties with the church. A year later, Chelsen Vicari decided to contact senior pastor George Mason to see how the church has been affected by the change.

My church, The Vertical Church in Yuma, Arizona, is growing explosively.

We have had to purchase two nearby properties to accomodate the growth.

“Our world runs on these empty slogans now - politics, religion, commerce.”

It might be described as “having a form of godliness but denying its power”.

Don’t agree.

Though street witnesses is important by living out your christian walk to those among you, family, co-workers, friends, customers etc to get them to come to church...

The worship of God and the preaching of the Word lets the Holy Spirit work on their hearts to believe...

He said a church with “wicked and WILLFUL sinners advocating homosexuality”.

Actually what he said was “wicked and WILLFUL sinners like open advocating homosexualitys”. I took that as an example of willful sinners and assumed that they wouldn't accept others as well. But if it's only one class of "wicked and WILLFUL sinners" that are banned then I stand corrected.

Churches are struggling with attendance because there are very few that preach and teach a true gospel. If they did, I'll bet people would be beating down the doors. See my tagline.

Amen, sister or brother!!!!

Don't blame the Gospel, it's not that hard to get right.

The problem is The Church (i.e. people).

"But Mason's main point of rebuttal, according to Vicari, seems to be that churches across the country are struggling with attendance."

Watermark (not Southern Baptist). The Village. Prestonwood Baptist. First Baptist. Lake Pointe.

“Churches are struggling with attendance because there are very few that preach and teach a true gospel.”

Absolutely correct! So many churches today are afraid of “being offensive” and they base their worship on one or two passages. For me, give me the whole gospel! If more people knew what they were really up against I believe they would come around, but nobody wants to believe. They’d rather believe in “aliens”.

“They always leave out the “go and sin no more” part.”

Just like the 1st Ammendment. They always leave out the “or prevent the free exercise thereof” part.

...to get them to come to church...

The worship of God and the preaching of the Word lets the Holy Spirit work on their hearts to believe...

But, the preaching of the gospel is FOOLISHNESS to those who haven't been quickened through the new birth. I agree that there can be some evangelical work done within the church, but this should normally be the exception. The gathering of believers is for the edifying of the body through fellowship in the spirit, through teaching from the Word, and through prayer. The unregenerate, unrepentant sinner has NOTHING in common with that.

A church accepting and advocating homosexuality would be like a branch of Alcoholics Anonymous accepting and advocating binge drinking.

There is no such thing as homosexuality. Sexuality is intrinsically related to reproduction, and two persons of the same sex intrinsically cannot reproduce.

I call it homoeroticism. A fellow FReeper calls it homosensuality.

Good nomenclature.

We conservatives should redirect the language, not follow suit with the propagandists. I think the term "homoeroticism" is highly accurate and should be used. An author I highly respect just gets embarrassingly open and calls them "men who want to have sex with men."

"....open to all, closed to none...."

They stole the slogan from the illegal aliens open-border crowd.

The whole bunch are liberals.

The Church body is where the Holy Spirit works. So you are saying unregenerate, unrepentant sinner should not enter a church where they might get saved ?

Jhn 16:7

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

Box Jhn 16:8

“And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Box Jhn 16:9

“of sin, because they do not believe in Me;

Box Jhn 16:10

“of righteousness, because I go to My Father

“They even had boys and girls swimming in different pools back then.”

At our Baptist summer camp, mixed swimming was not allowed. That was in the ‘60s. I’ve heard that’s still the rule, but am not sure.

No, I'm saying that a willful, unrepentant sinner, who declares his unambiguous sin NOT a sin, should not be a part of the life of the church (member in good standing, leader, officiant, voting member, etc.) Not until he repents and comes to some beginning saving knowledge of the truth. I'm not saying he has to be perfect, but he should be humbly walking in what is revealed as the truth and shouldn't be disruptive in having his own way in his old sinful habits. This might mean requiring those who experience exclusive same-sex attraction to STOP engaging in what their baser impulses demand. The same with normally attracted individuals. They might be attending as long as they aren't causing open dissension, but they should be participating as from the outside.

There are plenty of opportunities for those in the church to be effective witnesses to those outside, mostly by living holy lives unsullied by the outside world. I believe this stance is strongly supported in Scripture. I can find no scriptural examples to support having just anyone become a part of the intimate body of believers. In fact, there are several admonitions to EXPEL such people, or separate from them.
