ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The US Ambassador to Iraq, Douglas Silliman, along with the Kurdistan Region’s Prime Minister, Nechirvan Barzani, on Monday announced the start of constructing a new US Consulate in the capital of the semi-autonomous region.

In a statement delivered at a ceremony in Erbil, Barzani said that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) welcomes the construction of the compound, one of the largest in the world, and that “it is a sign of US confidence and trust in the Kurdistan Region, now and in its future.”

He mentioned that the project is an indicator that Washington wants to develop its diplomatic relations with the Kurdistan Region, “within the framework of federal Iraq.“

Not sure. I do know there is a pronounced divide between Baghdad and Erbil. And that the State Department really dropped the ball in handling the crisis around KirKurk.

Iran effectively controls Baghdad.

We just agreed to pay the salary of the KRG’s Peshmerga military this year. Which Baghdad took particularly badly.

The Peshmerga military has gone 2 months without being paid due to Baghdad cutting off their portion of the revenue from the oil production.

Guess we will see.

Syria News from Wash Examiner: (I always worry about our boots...bit of recurring panic from being Marine mom, I think.)

ON SYRIA: Sullivan also said in yesterday’s news conference in Toronto that Trump “will not leave a vacuum” in Syria, and will work to make sure the Kurds and other groups that have fought the Islamic State on behalf of the United States will not be abandoned. “The United States is committed to ensuring that all Syrians, including the Sunni Arabs, Kurds, Christians, Turkmen, and other minorities in northeast Syria, have a full seat at the table and an appropriate say in their future,” Sullivan said, stressing that the U.S. will remain committed in Syria until ISIS is defeated and its self-declared caliphate is completely eliminated.

“We will not leave a vacuum that can be exploited by the Assad regime and its supporters, Sullivan said. “We will work to ensure local forces enabled by our regional partners and allies will consolidate these gains, stabilize liberated territories, and prevent the return of ISIS. We will not leave a vacuum that can be exploited by the Assad regime and its supporters.”
