Earlier today, a madman with a gun opened fire on a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee. But one hero ran towards the bullets instead of away from them. Police say James Shaw Jr.s actions saved many lives.
From The Tennessean:
"James Shaw Jr., 29, said after feeling cornered he saw an opportunity to tackle the man shooting into an Antioch Waffle House. He said he doesnt feel like a hero.
Police spokesman Don Aaron told reporters Sunday morning that the Waffle House hero rushed the suspected shooter, disarmed him and threw the assault rifle he was carrying over the counter.
I dont really know, when everyone said that (of being a hero), it feels selfish, Shaw Jr. I was just trying to get myself out. I saw the opportunity and pretty much took it.
Shaw Jr. said he was at a fraternity house party before heading to the Bell Road Waffle House at about 2:30 a.m. with some friends. They left soon after because it was too packed, he said."
Shaw Jr. was determined to stop the shooter.
"I remember I was like Dang, Im basically in a barrel, Shaw Jr. said. There is no place for me to go.
As the suspect came through the door, he needed to reload, Shaw Jr. said. Thats when he said he rushed him.
When he came in, I distinctively remember thinking that he is going to have to work for this kill, Shaw Jr. said. I had a chance to stop him and thankfully I stopped him.
He added: I grabbed the gun and kept it down. He had one hand on it. I pulled it away and threw it over the bar.
The suspect then ran outside and escaped. Shaw Jr. did not follow him because he did not know if the suspect had any other weapons on his body.

After suffering a few scrapes on his elbow and being discharged from the hospital, Shaw Jr attended church with his mother.
James' aunt just told me that after being discharged from the hospital, he went home & changed clothes... and is now "in church with his mama. We are so proud of him." https://t.co/LNnyRUvCSH Dianne Gallagher (@DianneG) April 22, 2018
Thanks. Kudos to you Mister Shaw.
“that would be a sequitur, right?”
Yep! One of the first on FR!
I love this guy.
Plus at first party til 2 am? Probably not even sober. A little alcohol may have helped to save lives!!
This guy saved lives today. God, bless him.
Meanwhile, per Fox, the shooter was arrested for going on to restricted area at the White House last year. The feds took his guns (not clear he had them with him at time of White House incident) and gave them to his father. His father gave the guns back to him.
Watching now. Killer Ryan King is another mental case who was on the radar of authorities. Arrested last summer by the Secret Service for actions at the White House. Four weapons were confiscated but after investigation returned to legal owner, King’s father who in turn gave them back to his son. King was nude except for a coat when he opened fire at the Waffle House.
No positive ID of the rifle itself but it's an assault rifle......
I just came across this on Twitter:
The Associated Press

BREAKING: Nashville shooting suspect arrested last year by Secret Service for being in restricted area near White House, police say
Click on the Tennessean link on the top of the article, there is a picture of the killer and if you scroll the photos, the 6th picture is the one of the hero. Who’s hand was injured as he disarmed the shooter
Now saying that after DC incident, Illinois authorities revoked permits for guns but returned them to the father. It is unclear whether or not he had all or any of them with him in DC.
The killer is now dressed, still has two guns with him, and is at large in the Nashville area.
Fox is taking a break while they get more info and will be back with breaking news shortly.
They are not the hero. The young man who is the hero is black.
Compare this man to Broward county cops.
Here is the Hero’s picture.
Probably, the reason that Fox did not use the young man’s photo? It is owned by Gannett.
Fox gave a link in the text to a Gannett paper in TN instead. The picture is at that link.
My husband used to go to those turkey shoots ans thought if he gets drunk he wouldn't miss the target.
He was wroooooooooong. LOL
“Shaw Jr attended church with his mother.”
They both had plenty to thank God for!
Good man!
Thanjs. After reading a little further in the thread I realized my mistake and followed the link. Bless that brave guy.
Shooting up a Waffle House is a hate crime in Tennessee. Hats off to Mr Shaw Jr.
