What group do non-denominational churches fall in? They are such a huge percentage of churches out there not to have their own category here.

Mainline protestant denominations are also sometimes referred to as the “Seven Sisters”. As you might guess, there are seven of them:

United Methodist Church
Presbyterian Church USA
Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELCA)
Episcopal Church (PECUSA, ECUSA, or TEC, depending on which way the wind is blowing)
American Baptist Church
United Church of Christ
Disciples of Christ

More broadly, the term ‘Mainline’ might also be used to refer to Protestant Churches which are members of the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.

Generally speaking, these churches should be avoided by Christians.


Evangelical generally refers to theologically orthodox (if theologically diverse) churches which are not 1)mainline 2)fundamentalist or 3) Pentecostal as their primary identity. (Recognizing that some evangelical churches do allow for some exhibition of pentecostalism but not as a primary identity).
