More than 1,000 mourners gathered in Texas Saturday to attend the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush, the matriarch of a Republican political dynasty, who was dubbed "the first lady of the greatest generation" during the service.
The funeral was held in Houston at the Bushes' family church, St. Martin's Episcopal Church, and, per the former first lady's request, was a very simple service. Among the approximately 1,500 attendees were former Presidents George H.W. Bush, George Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. First lady Melania Trump and former first ladies Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton were also in attendance.
The service also included eulogies from Bush's close friend Susan Baker and historian Jon Meacham. "Barbara Bush was the first lady of the greatest generation," Meacham said. The historian said she was a "point of light" because of her dedication to the issue family literacy. Baker said that as the "tough, but loving, enforcer," Bush was "the secret sauce of this extraordinary family." "Thank you, dear Lord, for bringing Barbara Pierce Bush, this vibrantly beautifully human being, into the world," Baker said. "And especially for bringing her friendship into our lives."
Many of the speakers made sure to include funny stories about Bush, who was known for being quick-witted and having a good sense of humor. In another emotional moment, six of Bush's grandchildren -- all women -- each read a section from a passage from the Book of Proverbs that began with the lines, "Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her: 'Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.'"

The “Greatest Generation” is usually used in reference to WWII era Americans, often designating vets especially. Barbara Bush was of that generation, but so also were other First Ladies & Presidents. So, it’s not entirely correct to designate her as *THE* First Lady of the era. She was the last, though.
She was a fine First Lady, though.
As a grandmother no less.

There were millions of women who worked their asses off in factories, farms, endured the loss of loved ones, and wouldn’t have taken the extremist political positions she did just to “secure their legacies”
Nor put up with a husband’s infidelity or cowardice to fight back
I don’t hate the Bush family (as more than a few do) but I don’t love them either.This assessment is,IMO,at least a bit over the top.

Right...I would put Eleanor Roosevelt as WWI generation (born 1884), although her husband was President during WWII.
I would say the first First Lady of the Greatest Generation would be Lady Bird Johnson.
Interestingly, Jackie Kennedy would have been silent generation (only 12 when USA entered WWII).
Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan - WWII generation
Rosalynn Carter - Silent generation (14 when USA entered WWII).
I would say the first First Lady of the Greatest Generation would be Lady Bird Johnson.

I write With sincere respect for your right to give your opinion, but as a Vietnam era vet, I could not possibly disagree with you more. Indeed, I had to read it again real slow just to make sure you were saying what I thought I read the first time.

I don’t have a strong opinion of Barbra Bush one way or another. I don’t understand this coveraghe of her death. What exactly did she do to warrant it????? No more than any other first Lady and less than some.
I thought it MUST be something like that so I held my fire. I can’t think of anyone in American Political History that I abhor more than the Johnsons. Indeed, it is not an exaggeration for me to say I hold Hillary in higher esteem than Lady Bird.
Just think of it, we’ve survived the Johnsons, the Carters, the Clintons, the Bush’s and the Obamas. My god, America has had more than its share of horrid leaders at the top.
And, yes, I left out Nixon on purpose. He was many cuts above the ones named above.

I’d count her in for being married to JFK, as you know, who was in WWII.
I had thought about that too.
Also the psychological impact of WWII on a 12-14 year old girl compared to a 17-33 year old woman would not be as great as it would be for a 12-14 year old boy vs. a 17-33 year old man (numbers correspond to Bush 41 and Johnson).
Of course this makes Melania a boomer (born 1970).
Bigger differences: Julia Gardiner Tyler (30 years), Frances Folsom Cleveland (27 years) - both married during their husbands’ terms.
