Communists are all for civil liberties when they are in the minority, whether in pre-revolutionary Russia, pre-Castro Cuba, Franco's Spain, Pinochet's Chile, or America of the last century. When they take control, they will engage in suppression of “hate speech” or ideas with which they disagree. Old school liberals like Alan Dershowitz or Nat Hentoff recognized that their fellow leftists dropped their libertarian sentiments when they gain power.
