Curing cancer ‘not a realistic goal,’ cancer scientists say

Curing cancer ‘not a realistic goal,’ doctors focus on managing instead of curing disease

Over the last five years, cancer research has seen the “greatest advances,” including a new approach to treating the complex disease as a “chronic disease,” instead of trying to cure it.

“We have seen the greatest advances in cancer medicine in the last five years with drugs targeting the immune system moving into the clinic and showing remarkable response rates with quite a few different malignancies,” Lisa Coussens, Ph.D., Chair of the Department of Cell, Developmental & Cancer Biology, said to Fox News at the American Association for Cancer Research annual conference.

However response rates do not indicate medical doctors and scientists are closer to a cure, if still the goal.

“With regards to a cure for that, it’s really not a realistic goal. I don’t know if cancer is a disease that can be cured. I think for most of us, the goal is management where we think about cancer like other chronic disease,” Dr. Coussens said. “50 years ago diabetes was a death sentence, now it is a chronic disease that is managed.”

“It’s been a big shift in the last 10 years with thinking about cancer in that way: instead of a cure, treat it like a chronic disease where you live with disease and live your life well with that disease. It’s a major shift, but a tremendous goal,” she added.

According to the American Cancer Society, identifying certain types of cancer as a “chronic disease” was introduced around 2016.

“Cancer isn’t always a one-time event. Cancer can be closely watched and treated, but sometimes it never completely goes away. It can be a chronic (ongoing) illness, much like diabetes or heart disease,” the website says.

"No major disease has been cured since polio."

You don't consider stomach ulcers a major disease?

"If a universal treatment is found, it is a long way off."

Not true. See my post #39.

“I believe that there have been and are several cures that have been found for cancer, yet the powerful FDA will not approve them because this disease has been made a goldmine at the cruel expense of people who are needlessly suffering.”

You’re nuts.

Yes. Semantic issues.

If someone gets cancer and a treatment keeps them from dying, that’s a cure, at least of sorts.

Doctors in Israel will cure cancer... they can see beyond the ‘cash cow’ effects of cancer... Our medical system in the United States is a horror - incompetent and feeding off human misery.

They’d change their tune if the government stopped funding them and their donations stopped.

Ahh, no.
Nanotechnology is a buzz word.
Those of us who try to make technology advance are very quickly discovering all the easy stuff has already been done.

We are getting tired of making the impossible work.

Maybe they should spend less on advertising and more on research.

HIV/AIDS became a political issue. Billions of dollars was poured into research and multiple drug combinations have turned what was a fatal disease into a chronic manageable condition. Yes, those affected live markedly shorter lives than there non infected peers, but it is not the rapid death sentence that it was in the 80’s and early 90’s.

Who is “they”?

Research institutions typically do not advertise unless they are funded by donations. And if they are funded through donations, how will anyone know they need funds for research if they do not advertise?

Oh, good for them. Now that they no longer have to worry about succeeding they can stop trying. What a relief. I’m certain this is the mindset NASA had in the 1960s.

There was an old saying “only God and surgeons cure cancer” still mostly applicable today. If you can cut it all out, there is a cure, if there are residual cancer cells, it usually gets you (with a few exceptions). The fact that they are keeping some people alive for years instead of months is a real improvement.

For those who think various groups are hiding a cure for cancer, keep in mind the person with that knowledge will make more money than they can ever spend, they will bring it to market somewhere and the cat is out of the bag.

If you had the cure would you care about the industry? Honestly, you can make a mint and your name will go down in history. What would be the motivation for the person with the cure for cancer not to become a rich worldwide hero?

You would want to publicize your cure—but then you would meet the AMA and FDA (ah, but I repeated myself :-( ) and get to know them really well...

Large institutions want to perpetuate their existence and grow larger—it is not in their interest to cure disease.

I agree. There are so many different causes and combinations of such. I had bone cancer in HS and am considered ‘cured’. I think those who accuse the medical industry of not wanting to ‘cure’ it are off-base.
