1 dead after jetliner apparently blows an engine in flight

PHILADELPHIA — A Southwest Airlines jet apparently blew an engine at about 30,000 feet and got hit by shrapnel that smashed a window and damaged the fuselage Tuesday, killing a passenger and injuring seven others, authorities said.

The plane, a twin-engine Boeing 737 bound from New York to Dallas with 149 people aboard, made an emergency landing in Philadelphia just before noon as passengers breathing through oxygen masks that dropped from the ceiling said their prayers and braced for impact.

"I just remember holding my husband's hand, and we just prayed and prayed and prayed," said passenger Amanda Bourman, of New York. "And the thoughts that were going through my head of course were about my daughters, just wanting to see them again and give them a big hug so they wouldn't grow up without parents."

By brother(RIP) was at McDill in fifties when a B47 ignited out both ends of engine, on engine start-up. When it exploded, all surrounding personnel had found the drainage ditches. A turbine blade landed in the culvert my brother was in, he found it and drilled a hole in it and carried it on his key chain.

Sorry for the short answer but my wife is painting and just handed me a wet roller to clean. I think she has a brush coming my way soon.

I was just pointing out that the Chinese counterfeit baby food, dog food and aircraft parts. The guy that got caught making the bad baby food was executed.

I think we got some counterfeit injection nozzles for the 58000hp Sulzer diesel on my ship once. The whole box of very expensive nozzles failed. And the ship’s engine had to be shut down at sea to replace them. And then those failed. We limped home on dead cylinders.

I have held steam turbine blades in my hand. Very impressive engineering.

In fact when Skunkworks went to build the Y-12/SR-71 Aircraft the CIA created a Dummy Company to purchase and ship the quantity needed for the entire project right under their noses ! 0

They are saying it has a center tank in the fuselage. Well, does it or doesn't it?

The A380 Airbus certainly has one. It apparently carries over half a million pounds of fuel, dispersed over its wing fuel tanks and fuselage. Actually the number is bigger than this.

I need to disprove the air compression combine theory that is the new rage.

Where does all the exhaust from 200 metric meters of fuel go? I don’t understand, and just asking an honest question.

Into the air, out the back end of the jet engine.

More specifically - Assuming your jet fuel is pure dodecane (a form of kerosene), ideally every 2 molecules of that 200 metric meters of fuel combusts with 37 molecules of oxygen out of the air to form 24 molecules of carbon dioxide and 26 molecules of water (and a lot of heat). The stoichiometric equation for this combination follows:

2 C12H26(l) + 37 O2(g) → 24 CO2(g) + 26 H2O(g)

Of course, in a jet engine, this happens with more than one molecule at a time, otherwise you would not get a lot of thrust.

Freeper chemists are welcome to correct all my layman's mistakes in this explanation.

Please briefly explain what this theory claims. It might help those from whom you seek information to provide you with relevant and useful answers. It would also help if you would familiarize yourself with the basic structure of turbofan and turbojet engines. Your questions about where the exhaust gases go are a bit strange.

I don’t know where the fuselage tanks are. I would guess they are in the cargo hold, probably in the general area of the wing root.

I don’t know where you are getting your numbers, but they make no sense.

The total fuel capacity for a 737-700 is about 6900 gallons. Roughly 1300 gallons can be carried in each wing. They didn’t ignite because they apparently weren’t punctured by flying engine parts.

What the heck is the “compressed air combine engine theory”? That phrase makes no sense.

It should be fairly obvious to anyone who knows anything about turbine engines that the compressor started losing parts, which destroyed the rest of the engine, and the containment shroud failed catastrophically.

This theory is everywhere and the only way I can disprove it is by accounting for all the fuel that is supposedly stored in the wings or fuselage of a plane.

(I haven’t had time to watch the link, don’t blame me for whatever is said... I just picked a random one that seemed to account for the white condensation that comes out of the wings... it’s all beyond my pay grade... so again, don’t blame me!)

This site here says that the 737 holds 6,875 gallons or 26,025 liters of fuel max. cap. which weighs about 47,000 pounds or over 23 tons.

That means each wing is weighted down by 23,000 pounds at takeoff, not 7,000 pounds. (in jet fuel gallons to pounds).

I want to disprove this new theory that airlines have been using Tesla technology of compressed air turbines instead of fuel, but charging us for the fuel.

I am professionally involved in aviation, related to aircraft the size of the DHC-6 Twin Otter. I can personally attest to having personally pumped JET-A and JP-8 into the belly tanks of a Twin Otter. The stuff coming out of the fuel nozzle isn't compressed air. It looks and smelled like kerosene. I'll go so far as to say that it IS kerosene. I can smell the gas coming out of the turbine engines. It's not compressed air. It smells like burnt kerosene. I'll go so far as to say that it IS burnt kerosene. Funny thing ... when we take off, the belly tanks are full. When we land, they're empty. And the engines are HOT. Funny thing ... the only pipes leading out of the tanks go straight into the engines. And shockingly enough, there are no compressed air tanks anywhere on the aircraft.

Draw your own conclusions.

Okay, the only thing I can attest to is the sound of the engines; they do sound like air turbines and not combustion engines, especially on landing when they are thrown into reverse (excuse my layman’s ignorance of proper terms) What did you think of the video? I cannot disprove anything they are saying.

The engines aren’t “thrown into reverse” ... “thrust reversers” deflect the exhaust forward to assist in braking.

If you’ve got a window seat abeam the engines you can see this yourself.

That artificially speeded up guy on your video has no idea what a Auxiliary Power Unit is for. It’s used to START the main engines. After the main engine(s) are started, they compress their own air; that’s what the compressor is for. The APU can be, and often is, turned off.

OBTW, many smaller turbine engine aircraft don’t have an APU. They use a lead-acid electric battery to start one engine, then use the running engine to start the other.
