As I wrote a few days ago, I had minimal expectations of Chappaquiddick The Movie, which opened last week despite the best efforts of the Kennedy family and their various retainers and enablers. I have always been revolted by the fact that Ted, after killing Mary Jo Kopechne, did not have the decency to do a John Profumo and retire from public life for the rest of his days - and I was even more revolted by the way Massachusetts voters did not have the decency to impose that choice upon him...
That combination of outsiders and neophytes may be one reason why this film is considerably more gripping and potent than a cookie-cutter limousine-liberal yawnfest like The Post...
This is a more sophisticated and blackly comic view of the nature of politics than, say, George Clooney's Ides of March. The acidic glamour of power corrodes even Mary Jo's fellow Boiler Room Girls. No sooner are they informed that their friend is dead than one of them steps forward to volunteer: "What can we do to help the Senator?" The ladies themselves, having kept their silence for half-a-century, are said to deny this version of events, and the words themselves are put in the mouth of a fictional Boiler Roomer created for the movie: "Rachel" (Olivia Thirlby). But, whatever their motivations, the actions of almost everyone in this tale facilitate the replacement of one victim by another: Edward M Kennedy.
Chappaquiddick is an excellent film that deserves to find an audience...

All realists knew Ted was a murderer.
Agreed. But this is the bed the Democrat-Communists made for themselves and why we in the Republican party do not care about the pornstar. True or not.
Skakel was an in-law of the Kennedys, not a Kennedy.
Both passenger side windows were blown out when the car hit the water and the drivers window was rolled down. There was a current in the water. I think what probably happened is the current helped push him out. Before the current pushed him out, She struggle with him in her way, and ended up in the back seat , with current pushing in at her towards the only closed window, driver side, back window. She died with her hands clutching the seat, mouth pointed at the roof to breath air the air pocket.
“Mark,as one such voter (life long) all I can say is “you don’t get to Massachusetts much,do ya!”
Doesn’t have to...he sees what they’ve done to VT and NH.
“...Jeff Kuhner 680am WRKO Boston denotes MA maybe more conservative than we realize,...”
It is....but screwed by the big city. I have a WW2 vet 1st cousin who has lived there for decades He’d personally strangle the libs with his bare hands if he could.
I disagree. The problem is that Garagan and the other guy left the party. They left because Fat Head Ted was in the driveway, after the crash. They tell partial truths, but I think the main story is Ted was going to the beach for some hanky panky, saw a police car and hit the gas. He didn’t want a DUI arrest with a girlfriend, for his wife to see in the papers. The cop watched the car speed away.
I think he was in the accident, and after feeling all that water inside the car, he figured she was dead.
Then he hoped his two buddies would cover for him, and say they never left the cottage and knew nothing, and that Mary Joe just drove off the bridge alone. But his two buddies had witnesses back at the cottage that would trip them up, so they couldn’t lie.
From LBJ we got the Great Society.
From The Swimmer we got "immigration reform".
You forgot one. With the Ruskies opening up their books we find out the "OG Russian Collusion Comrade" was none other than Sub Commander Ted!
Yes we have the records how he was colluding with the Ruskies to thwart Reagan. No wonder he asked to be buried in Arlington.......
Why would anyone want to? The massholes voted approximately 2:1 for Hillary in 2016. If you're not a liberal in MA you don't count at all. Only NY is more restrictive on 2nd amend rights (according to Guns and Ammo).
True. But he did not want the fact to become known that he and MJK had left the party — on the sly, BTW. Tongues might wag and, perhaps, other BRG’s egos might have been bruised.
They were spotted by Deputy Luke as you state and, being, probably, DWI he feared having to have a ‘chat’ with Luke. Neither THoC nor MJK were in total control of their faculties I suspect.
It was nigh on to midnight, I believe, by that time and the ferry, the On Time, had ceased running for the day. So, she was to return to the cottage, re-enter surreptitiously as she and he had left earlier, and, if questioned, say that she had taken THoC back to the boat and was just returning.
Honestly, some of the details may be incorrect — the comings and goings on the road, etc. — but I can’t see where anyone can claim his story of not remembering, NEVER remembering how he exited the upside-down Oldsmobile is believable. The driver’s door was closed, the window rolled up and undamaged at least from the perspective that it had not been kicked out. He couldn’t remember because he just simply was NOT in that car when it went into the drink. To me that is the only thing that makes any sense.
When he learned what had happened he nearly crapped in his pants! Of that I’m willing to bet money! He and his rump swabs probably thought the story they cobbled together and pounded into him to regurgitate to the MassHole population and to the LEOs and, eventually, to the court would make him look heroic; he tried ever so hard, to the point of exhaustion, to rescue that ‘poor girl’. No, he didn’t. There wasn’t a heroic bone in his slovenly body. The only thing he, and they, thought about was how to spin this tragedy so that THoC was viewed as just that: a HERO.
But, once a schmuck always a schmuck I say.
Have a day.
Things havent changed. Democrats get away with their crimes. The crook and sleaze Menendez is still in the senate.
I think you’re misinformed, sir. The windows were not blown out, were not open at all. Had they been there would not have been an air bubble trapped at the floor which was now facing up. That’s where she spent her last minutes of life; in the air bubble, clawing for a way out which was evidenced by scratch marks on the carpeting where she had desperately attempted to find a way out.
The car was positioned somewhat nose down, definitely bottom up so the rear seat was higher than the front seats and the air bubble was aft of the center line of the vehicle. That’s why they found her body in the rear half of the passenger compartment.
At the point of impact and submersion there is minimal current; tidal flow, yes, but not at such a rate as to sweep a body, THoC’s body, certainly, out of the vehicle to eventual safety.
I am convinced that, based upon his demeanor on the motel balcony on Sunday morning, his total shock and panic (all self serving, of course) upon being told of MJK’s death that he just couldn’t have been in that car at the time it went off the bridge.
Now, had he been so S-Faced that night that he didn’t recall anything of the event (improbable at best), perhaps. One could then say he blacked out and recalled nothing and the ‘facts’, as presented in the movie are correct. But had he been that S-Faced he would have been unable to present as he did at 0800 the next morning.
So, I stand by my theory that THoC wasn’t anywhere near the Oldsmobile when it went into the drink.
OK, but I think that scenario is a tad too convoluted.
I think they left the party unseen with the intention of having ‘fun on the beach’. They did so, upon making their way back they saw Deputy Luke, panicked because he was DWI so he told her to drive back to the cottage alone while he swam across to Edgartown and, thus, her absence, if even known by the others by then, would be covered by her having had to take THoC to the last ferry of the day.
Ultimately, we’ll never know for certain what actually happened that night save a girl died in THoC’s mommy’s car.
And that's why Robert F Kennedy Jr (heroin junkie) appeared as a character witness during his sentencing *and* has written a book claiming that his cousin was framed?
The producers just barely got this thing released 10 years after Teddy went on to his eternal damnation.Anyone who tried it while he was alive would have come to understand just what "Buffalo Bill" meant when he shouted at the Senator's daughter "you don't know what pain is!"
What an a excellent review tks for posting
Steyns references to time and culture throughout this piece are perfect for those of us who remember this
My dad was a Goldwater man as was my grandfather and they hated the Kennedys
From bootlegger stock swindler patriarch to Bay of Pigs abandonment and so forth
I agree today JFK policies would be akin to GOPe which is what most more moderate Dems then would be today but Teddy was a fiasco in his own right
Just weak
That was shallow assed water barely over the car...
It makes no sense
Sonny Montgomery told my dad Kennedy was well loved by many on the hill as a funny amenable guy who was kind even to freshmen critters but many suspected it suited him to leave her there that night
Maybe pregnant?
I cant say for sure but couldnt live with myself and I have in my life jumped into flaming cars and a flaming semi with a gay couple inside
Just looking at the wreck he could have gotten her out...
Six foot of water .....
I didn't say they weren't close to the Kennedy family, only that there is no Kennedy blood. The Kennedys and the Skakels are all scumbags and I am not defending any of them.
See how long the media has no problems with people in office who kill and rape never trust anyone on the left.
What darker event is this movie intended to eclipse?
