President Donald Trump is poised to pardon Scooter J. Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, according to sources familiar with the presidents thinking.
The president has already signed off on the pardon, which is something he has been considering for several months, sources told ABC News.
The move would mark another controversial pardon for Trump and could raise questions as an increasing number of the presidents political allies have landed themselves in legal jeopardy. The White House has repeatedly said that no pardons are currently on the table for people caught up in the Russia investigation.
Libby was convicted in 2007 of lying to the FBI and obstruction of justice in the investigation into the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame, a former covert CIA operative. Then-President George Bush commuted Libby's 30-month sentence, sparing him prison time, but didn't pardon him.
After Libby claimed that he couldn't have been the source of the leak, multiple people came forward to testify that they learned of Plame's identity from Libby prior to when Libby said he had first received the information.
At trial, Libby claimed to have simply forgotten he actually learned about the identity from Cheney a month before he said he had.
Since the conviction, Libby has since had his law license restored and former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell restored his voting rights in 2013.
Many conservatives have been urging a pardon for Libby, including attorneys Joe diGenova and his wife, Victoria Toensing.

“Let’s face it. The entire reason the DC left is going nuts about Trump and targeted their efforts on the Justice Dept. is because there are a large number of criminal Democrats who would be vulnerable under a functioning Trump Justice Dept.”
You have to hand it to them, they disabled DOJ. Of course these things are a lot easier when you don’t play by rules and enjoy their manifold other advantages and (perceived) rewards.
I fully agree, start routinely doing these things; put the spotlight on as many of the most egregious cases as possible. The President really needs to look hard at doing something like this. Might just turn the tables.
Good.
Trump is doing the right things.
This volley fired over their heads. Next one comes after the check your fire command followed by drop 100 and fire for effect.
Wasn’t it Karl Rove and Armitage who actually revealed Plame’s identity long before Libby did?
“How can anyone out Scooter Libby when she had already outed herself in a news magazine interview?”
I remember. Everyone who knew her knew where she worked!
I’m beginning to think “The Animal Farm” inside the beltway has become so corrupt that is part of their culture.
This is a great move.
Apropos considering what Rosenstein and Mueller are doing....
Libby himself a victim of a witch hunt and a victim of a ‘process crime’ like they want to get DJT on.
Excellent! Undo the travesty of that kangaroo court. So unfair! While PDJT is preparing any statement to go with the pardon, make it abundantly clear what Valerie Plame’s position was, i.e., NOT undercover.
BTW this is to establish a president IMHO, up next, Flynn and Manafort and who knows who else maybe his Attorney before he fires Mullhead and Rosey...
Setting the stage for Flynn ...
Obama pardoned 100s of drug dealers, many of which had multiple felonies attached to their list of accomplishments. Libby was a scapegoat for a comparatively minor incident. Let’s not start on the dozens of Obama appointments and allies that have leaked classified information to both foreign and domestic enemies of US citizen taxpayers.
What does George Bush have to say about this?.....
