“A civil war cannon is frankly much less dangerous than weapons we are allowed to carry on the streets in many of the states and cities in our country today.”

I dunno, man. Pretty sure getting hit by a 4 pounder cannonball would ruin the rest of my day.

And grape-shot is not as sweet and delicious as its name might imply...

Someone I his district should start towing a cannon behind a Jeep up and down the street in front of his home-town office.

Oh, wait, Illinois prohibits open carry. Never mind.

You are absolutely right - and this ignoramous has just verified that he knows nothing about artillery OR small arms. He's probably picturing a single solid shot (fired by a 6 pounder or 12 pounder muzzle loader) striking a single person. In reality, a single shot could take down many men; and if it's an explosove shell, or grape, or cannister, rather than solid shot, you're talking dozens. And the artillery of that era was not limited to field pieces: the Union had 15" Dahlgrens & Rodman columbiads in service (and experimented with 20"), while Confederate artillery (IIRC) reached at least 12.75" bore diameter.

This guy is just another ignorant progressive, who values his own opinions over fact...

Yeah. And just imagine what canister shot would feel like.

Let’s ask him. "Would you prefer your house be hit by one round from a fused, explosive ball from a four pound civil war cannon, or one round from a .223 cal. AR-15 semi-automatic rifle you call an Assault Rifle? Your choice.”

Just think what a round of canister shot could do for your outlook
