White House Chief of Staff John Kelly threatened to quit on March 28, according to sources familiar with the events.
What I'm hearing: Kelly blew up at Trump in an Oval Office meeting that day, and while walking back to his office muttered he was going to quit. Sources said it was not related to the David Shulkin firing that happened the same day.
A senior administration official said that calling it a threat was "probably too strong, it was more venting frustration." Kelly often says he doesn't have to be there and didn't seek the job originally.
Details:
Kelly packed up some personal belongings, though I'm told that wasn't necessarily because he was walking out. He was fired up enough that colleagues got allies to call in to calm him down. At one point DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen — perhaps the person in the administration he trusts most — came over to talk him off the ledge.
Context: Kelly has verbally threatened to quit more than once over the past eight months.
Why it matters: Very few people inside this White House feel secure or satisfied, given the wild, unpredictable mood and policy changes of Trump. Kelly months ago restored some order and sanity to the place but most of that is gone.

They are all out for his scalp because he’s crapping all over all of them and their do nothing approaches to governance, where the absence of action on the problems facing us is regarded as a “good thing.” Trump has “pulled back the curtain” on these “wizards of do nothing” for the very first time in my lifetime of nearly 78 years. Even our revered Ronald Reagan didn’t expose the “deep state” for what it is for all to see. We can all see, for the first time what the Framers had in mind when they attempted to make our government one run by non-politicians. The lawyers and other worthless $hit that has taken up residence in our Congress, have done an exemplary job of squelching the notion of the “citizen politician” and we are seeing now just how badly we’ve been served.
You are too gullible to fall for deep state propaganda. Trust me it will get worse. It is time for many of you to start to grow a pair. Get out and get involved. Being a keyboard warrior for the most part accomplishes nothing.

I think of our greatest presidents, Lincoln especially. He was surrounded by disloyal people, who undercut him at every single turn, but he hung in there.
My depression comes from the thought of Trump going it alone and being set up to fail.

This is about the fifteenth time Kelly is supposed to have threatened to quit. That threat lost its effectiveness the second time it was used.
I dunno, seeing a fair amount of CIB’s on the army folks. The air force guys and gals all seem to be wing wipers, and the navy folks have a lot of surface warfare and dolphin badges. None of those are easy accomplishments.
