I read an article a few years ago that claimed the GOP was complicit in throwing Bork under the bus. There was apparently a lot of resentment over his role in the “Saturday Night Massacre” back in the Nixon days.

During Bork's confirmation hearing I was a big fan of his. I did not learn until much later Bork didn't understand the purpose of the second amendment. He would have been a terrible justice on the supreme court - another Earl Warren.

Said Bork: “National Rifle Association is always arguing that the Second Amendment determines the right to bear arms. But I think it really is the people's right to bear arms in a militia. The NRA thinks it protects their right to have Teflon-coated bullets. But that's not the original understanding.”

That statement, unfortunately for Bork's reputation, is not a one-off.
