South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy (R) urged President Trump to interview with special counsel Robert Mueller in order to help wrap up the Russia probe on Wednesday, arguing the president is "uniquely" qualified to answer many of Mueller's questions.
In an interview with CNN, the chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee argued that speaking with Mueller is not "risky" for Trump if he has nothing to hide.
"Only he knows what he knows. So I would tell you, if you did not rob a bank there is no reason for you not to sit down and talk with the FBI about the bank robbery," Gowdy said.
"If you have nothing to hide, sit down. Assuming a fair prosecutor, and I think Mueller is, sit down and tell him what you know," Gowdy added. "I think he is uniquely well-positioned to answer some of the questions that not just the special counsel but the American people have."
Gowdy's remarks come after a Washington Post report Tuesday night revealed that Trump was not the "target" of Mueller's investigation but rather the "subject," a distinction that Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, said is "meaningless" to him but means a great deal more to the FBI.
"I don't think those terms, target versus subject...the only word that matters to me in the criminal justice system is defendant," Gowdy said. "So if you're not the defendant, whether you're the target or the subject, I know the FBI gets really caught up in those two words, [but] as a former federal prosecutor they're meaningless to me."

The COPS are legally allowed to lie to you.
It’s never a level playing field when it comes to the gov’t.
I used to like Gowdy, but his praise of Mueller has made me skeptical of him.
Gowdy is not just praising Mueller, he’s CAMPAIGNING for him all over the place. Sunday shows, now CNN, etc. My guess is he is doing this under direction from GOP leadership. He’s creating daylight between POTUS and the House GOP for the midterms. I don’t agree with it but it is obviously Ryan’s plan to leave POTUS bare behind to the wind.
I too was once a big fan of Gowdy and his beltway theater performances. Then I looked at his donor list a couple years ago and saw it was full of K Street corporate types. Never trusted him since. All bark and no bite.
I am trying to figure out what Gowdys game is. He is not seeking reelection, he just co-authored a book and he seems to be a Mueller supporter. He must have an end game objective, but as of now, he hasnt played his hand. Stay tuned.
IMO, he’s positioning the GOPe for the midterms. They have totally abandoned POTUS. What Gowdy says now is no different than what Amnesty Ryan says.
.
Gowdy is a swamp creature.
Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk but produce absolutely nothing.
I cant prove it, but my sense is that Gowdy hates Trump. Hes trying to set him up while concomitantly trying to look supportive.
They all hate Trump. But this is about the midterms. Gowdy is playing team ball for the GOPe here and parroting the “give Mueller a chance” line to hamstring and keep POTUS distracted.
Im starting to think he was controlled opposition all along or he was recently handed a manila envelope.
Check out Gowdy’s donor list. It’s mainline GOPe. Amnesty, etc. The works.
What the phenomenon of DJT taught me was that 99% of D.C. are Uniparty front people for the powerful elite that rule the world. Some players were obvious. Others, like Gowdy, were stealth. All are Swamp.
Mueller is perpetrating a financial fraud upon US Treasury.
I knew it when the Repukis did absolutely NOTHING to stop O’muslim.
It was obvious they were all bought off or compromised.
Sounds about right. Gowdy infuriates me. He’s the essence of what’s wrong with the GOP. I’m glad he’s retiring but it would be nice if he could keep a lower profile in the interim. But as you say, he has to do his part for the team. Blech.

Trey Gowdy, Certified Swamp Creature!
.
Hes angling for a sweet lobbyist gig.
This dumb cluck either has an evil twin, or he is bi-polar.
I never saw such a change in a man.
Unless he was being blackmailed.

...
He was always about talk and theater. I’m glad he’s leaving.
I think Gowdy's problem is that he's been part of the club -- the Prosecutor Club. He's leaving congress, and he wants back in. Most prosecutors are pretty liberal and left wing. We like to think they aren't, but they are.
Gowdy's young and is going to need a job. He's trying to fit back in. While in congress, he just needed to look pretty for his constituency. Now he needs to look pretty for his peers.
And he's an ass for what he's doing...
“What the hell has happened to Gowdy? They have something on him?”
Do you think Trump and Manafort were the only people being surveilled by Obama, FBI, et al.? I think your second sentence answers your own question.
.
Mueller clearly has custody of Gowdy’s reproductive organs.
.
Gowdy: Trump should let Mueller crucify him.
Sessions endorsed the Bundy PERsecutors, whose case was thrown out with prejudice!
They are all part of the Club.
If any Congresscritter asked Sessions why last August, he did not overrule Rosenstein’s approval of Mueller’s request to expand his investigation BEYOND its original scope, I wonder what he would say?
There is just no reasonable defense I can think of at this point. Sessions only recused himself from Russian collusion investigation. He did not recuse himself from Mueller’s expansion into NON-Russian areas, which Rosenstein admitted was the gist of Mueller’s August 2017 request.
Yet he sat back and did NOTHING to stop or overrule Rosenstein when R. approved Mueller’s expansion request.
Right there, Sessions has revealed himself. Irrefutable, IMO.
