Our growing taste for shrimp is bad news for climate change

Fishing boats are catching more shrimp and lobsters than ever before—and although that may be good news for your next visit to a seafood restaurant, it’s not so hot for climate change. The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by fishing vessels rose 28% from 1990 to 2011, according to a new study, thanks largely to a greater haul of this premium seafood.

All told, crustaceans account for 22% of the CO2 emissions from fishing, despite making up just 6% of all the tonnage landed. Given that fuel prices have decreased since 2008, the researchers expect that the trend has continued. The carbon intensity of lobster and wild-caught shrimp is less than most beef or lamb, they note. So surf still beats turf. But by far the most climate-friendly seafood is small pelagic fish, such as sardines, herrings, and anchovies.

First they came for my steak, claiming the methane from the cow farts was a major cause of global warming. i didn’t protest because my doctor told me to cut back on my red meat intake.

Then they came for my shrimp, stating the sea trollers generated too much CO2... i did not protest, because my cholesterol was too high and cutting back on shell fish was recommended by my doctor.

Then they came for my doctor, saying his charges were way too high and he should work for next to nothing, because we all have a right to him working for free. i didn’t say anything because i wanted to change doctors anyway...

now i can eat meat again, with a side of shrimp.

(1) CO2 is food for all plants. Farm crops, trees all benefit

(2) No scientific proof transparent CO2 causes global warming

(3) Sun cycles are million times more potent than man made global warming

(4) Would you rather freeze your butt in cold weather or prefer warmer weather wearing shorts & tee-shirt?

(5) How did the last ice age end? There were several miles thick glaciers on top of Chicagoland. Where did that global warming come from 12-20 thousand years ago to melt all that ice and form the largest body of fresh water on earth (The Great Lakes)???

Everything that you enjoy is bad.

Funny, that. I’m sure it’s all pure coincidence that so called global warming doesn’t have a single positive effect... or those stories don’t fit the narrative. Even more criminal than the lies masquerading as science, these incessant guilt trip stories about everything anyone loves, even shrimp; these stories are corrosive to people’s health.

The anti-science morons who produce this BS should be put in stocks and have crustacean shells thrown at them for the rest of their criminal, worthless lives.

I believe most shrimp consumed in America are farm raised.

Got my first bout of gout two months ago. Doctor told me to avoid shrimp, scallops and beer.

He didn’t tell me I was saving the planet. But I guess I am.

I’m confused...do we want the climate to change or don’t we?

We are to want those aspects of climate change that the TV tells us to want, but only at those times that they tell us to want it. Duh.

(Oh, wait... were you expecting a consistent, logical, stable answer based on science and economics so that you could plan your business, family, and personal actions and expenditures accordingly? No, sorry, the Left simply doesn't DO that. You obey the edict of the moment. One rule. Much simpler. You may go now, drone.)

I used to love shrimp. Fried, with tarter sauce. Mmmmmm! Then someone said to me: “No thanks, I don’t care for bottom feeders.” Haven’t been able to enjoy the little buggers since. Turns out I thought I liked shrimp, but actually liked fried batter and tarter sauce.

“The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted by fishing vessels rose 28% from 1990 to 2011...”

And how much CO2 was emitted by printing this tripe?

“Fishing boats are catching more shrimp and lobsters than ever before”

Just not in the U.S.A.

The U.N. Agenda 21 based regulations that the National Marine Fisheries Service has imposed on American fishermen has decimated our commercial fishing industry. Thanks to that we are importing over 90% of the seafood consumed here and exporting around $15 billion a year in the trade deficit mostly to communist countries. Transfer of wealth.

Its all based on fraudulent stock assessments also. Proven in the stock assessment on red snapper in the South Atlantic region which pegged the species at near extinction. Testimony to Congress pointed out they fabricated data to produce that result. Never before have red snapper been as abundant as they actually are. Nevertheless, it has been under a total closure for approx. seven years.

Bon appetit on your imported fish and shrimp!

These people don't know how much CO2 was emitted from fishing vessels in those years. They make these numbers up.

Which is just one more reason not to believe in this global warming crappola.

Humans must quit eating (fishing, meat farms, dairy farms, vegetable farms - all are adding to CO2 production) and just die to save the planet. /sarc

Nobody but liberals believes this.

Because these people just make up this data to justify their agenda.

There is no way they could measure the CO2 from fishing vessels in the open ocean over a 20 year period. And then come up with an exact number like 28%? Not even close to being credible.

Unless someone has a better take on this, this is all bunch of crappola.
