Almost everyone in this country can claim to be of Latino origin. My wife is of Italian origin, the original speakers of Latin. Just for good measure, they spent a couple of generations in Puerto Rico before coming to the United States.

And me? I have Huguenot ancestry. Huguenots originated in France and many moved to the Netherlands when it was a province of Spain (including mine) before it became independent. French is a Romance language and part of the Latin language family, so I have as much justification to claim Latino origin as anyone else.

Now, where are my government freebies and affirmative action points?

Back in the 1970s, the euphemism du jour for Hispanics was “Spanish Surnamed Americans.” I had a roommate in college who got a full ride scholarship that was only available to Spanish Surnamed Americans. His last name was Sanchez.

He was mostly Irish (with red hair and could not to outside without getting sunburned), but his great-grandfather was from Spain.
