The left’s ‘Denmark envy’
Washington Post ^ | March 27, 2018 | Megan McArdle

Health insurance gets all the headlines, the fierce political battles, the politicians accusing each other of wanting fine, upstanding American citizens to die. But while health insurance may pay your medical bills, it does nothing to protect you from a big risk that all Americans face: that when they get sick, they won’t be able to work, and all the obligations they’ve taken on — the car payments, mortgage, student loans and credit card debt — will send them spiraling into financial catastrophe.

What the middle class may need even more than health insurance, in other words, is income insurance: assurance that if the worst does happen, at least you’ll be able to keep the house and the car and some semblance of a normal life. In the United States, tales of budgetary disaster after an illness are all too common. In Denmark, by contrast, where workers enjoy a high level of income protection, the personal economic effects of a serious illness such as breast cancer are fairly muted.

The neo-cons think everyone has the capacity or the desire to live in a democratic and liberal country. While the Left thinks one can have Scandinavian welfare states everywhere. Countries needs generations of building the foundation to make such programs work.

Its called disability insurance. Most employers include short term plans in their benefit package.

Why does the STATE have to get involved?

Slightly off topic: Isn’t Denmark like the child-porn capital of the western hemisphere?

Cradle to grave welfare systems require massive taxation and a high degree of social solidarity to make them work.

And Denmark is a very small country.

What liberals and democrats love is the socialists use of language...Denmark and Iceland exterminate down syndrome babies,so they eliminated down syndrome problem....
Democrats would like to eliminate their enemies..Then everyone can live in peace...
Dems and libs are already successful getting rid of poverty by aborting the poor babies....

I had disability insurance through my employer for thirty years. Now I am retired and can’t afford it. My sister carried a private policy for twenty years until the premium got rediculous for the miniscule payout that never went up.

From the article: according to the Social Security Administration, a 20-year-old has a one-in-four chance of becoming disabled before reaching retirement age.

The author is simply taking social security disability numbers and dividing them by the population. 60 years ago, that figure would likely be one-in-fifteen. Obesity, drugs, destruction of the family and an expanded social security welfare net have suddenly made many more Americans "disabled."

Denmark and the others have until recently practiced national socialism without calling it that (obviously).

However, to have successful national socialism you first have to have a nation, IOW, you can’t have Denmark without Danes.

The reason why liberals love Denmark is because there are virtually no blacks living there.

"....assurance that if the worst does happen, at least you’ll be able to keep the house and the car and some semblance of a normal life...."

Leave it to a WashingtonCompost liberal-types to think that when your life goes into the sh*t-canner, that the taxpayers ought to cover your living expenses so you can lead some "semblance" of a normal life.

Their logic: A "normal" life is when the government (translated: the taxpayers) provides for you.

But if we get the government involved every time our lives go south on us, the mentality will be like it is in much of society today, "Where do I go to get my freebies?".

Sometimes life does go to sh*ts and other times not so much. But that is life. Dealing with and surviving tough times are how people build character and resilience and a strong wills, traits which are sorely lacking in our country today.

One last point. The progressives who are in love with Denmark, never mention that it is only two-thirds the size of West Virginia with a total population the size of Colorado. In other words, it is very small compared with the size and population of the US. Most people can't afford a car because their taxes are so astronomically high.

Ask a Danish expatriate living in the US why they moved to the US when Denmark is supposed to be so ideal.

They will tell you the same thing my Chicago friends I knew in Arizona would tell me when they were bragging about how nice Chicago was. I would ask them the same basic question, "If Chicago is as nice as you say it is, why did you move to Arizona?

Their answer: "It ain't that nice."

Yes, and long term disability insurance can be bought by individuals for a moderate sum. Peace of mind, not that expensive if one makes the choice to have it.

To the extent that mainland Denmark is in the western hemisphere, yes. In other words, no.

You can’t get disability insurance after retirement age, which I think is 65 in the disability industry (or maybe its Social Security retirement age, which is a little higher) If you have a disability policy, it gets cancelled when you reach retirement age, even if you had it all your life personally and carried all those years. That said, if someone wanted disability after 65 and was working they might be able to get a special policy but the cost would be prohibitive.

Pretty much. Belgium is pretty lenient on that too. They just have different attitudes about that kind of thing. Heck, incest between consenting family members is legal in Germany, Italy and France.

The article fails to call “social trust” by its true name: A WASP culture - which is definitely NOT present in Greece (where it describes cheating as widespread).

It also fails to address the most obvious problem with European socialism (in Denmark and elsewhere): Every country in the EU has a fertility rate of less than 2 (meaning parents don’t even replace themselves).

Finally, it fails to address how the second point leads to the cheap shot about trusting immigrants: Because birthrates are so low, they NEED to import immigrants (who can then play “victim”).

Megan McCardle is a regular feature on instapundit.com, a Libertarian web site. Most of her columns are at least moderate.
