U.S. Almost Attacked Russians in Syria Again but Moscow Stepped in, Mattis Says

Defense Secretary James Mattis revealed Tuesday that U.S. forces nearly bombed Russians fighting on behalf of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sometime in the past week, but a call with Moscow's own armed forces defused the situation.

Mattis said he believed Russian military officials when they said they were not giving orders to private Russian citizens battling the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) and rebel groups as part of a coalition of pro-Syrian government militias. Following an incident last month, in which the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS killed a large number of these pro-Assad fighters, including Russians, Mattis said another clash was recently avoided after Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, contacted Russia's top military leader, Army General Valery Gerasimov, via a deconfliction hotline.

"There were other Russian elements like this moving across the deconfliction line, which is the river, as you know, into an area that we'd agreed with the Russians they could operate in, as they had allowed us to operate basically to the west of the river, up at Tabqa and around Raqqa. We'd agreed for them being slightly east of the river at Deir Ezzor," Mattis told reporters at the Pentagon.

Headline: Syria archbishop calls on West to back President Bashar al-Assad in war against Islamist rebels

(Google the article; I don’t believe we can post Telegraph to FreeRepublic)

There has always been “christians” who back butchers & dictators throughout history. This is no different. They’ll have to answer for their actions to the Terrible Judge soon enough.

My point stands, Assad is a murderous thug and will be dealt with accordingly. The US doesn’t have the cojones to do it, but the IDF does.

> The US needs to get out of the squabble in Syria. <

Agreed. Syria is a sovereign state. You insert your own troops in another sovereign state under two conditions only. Either you are invited in, or you declare war.

Neither is the case here.

I wonder if Putin ordered incineration vans to Syria?

The American Expeditionary Force Siberia consisting of almost 8000 US Military personnel, carrying a full compliment of arms, crossed the Russian border and established control of Vladivostok in 1918. Additionally, the Polar Bear Expedition of about 5,000 American soldiers were sent to Arkhangelsk during the same time period.

They were not invited by any Russian Governmental agency.

Also present in Northern Russia were British and French Troops actively making war on the Russians in general.

Sounds like you have little sympathy for the beleaguered Christians of Syria. Assad is far more tolerant than the Islamic tyrants who rule Saudi Arabia, but somehow the neocons (like you and McCain) never call for taking out the Saudi regime. It seems to be only when a government is protecting Christians from jig ideas , as Assad is doing , that the neocons want that government taken out.

I don’t. Not for ones who back tyrants or misguided folks like you either.

Keep believing that a muslim actually cares and protects Christians. See how long you last with that train of thought.

Assad is going down. Count on it.

You are contradicting yourself. On the one hand, you say it is a lie that Assad is protecting Christians from jihadis. But when I point to articles about how Syrias Christians support him over the rebels because he is protecting the Christian community in Syria, you blast those Christians. Can’t have it both ways.

I suppose you hate the Christians of Aleppo for rejoicing when Assad retook the city, which allowed them to celebrate Christmas in the open for the first time since the US-backed Islamic rebels had taken over the city five years earlier

As a Christian, I stand with fellow believers in Syria. Assad is protecting them. Like Cyrus, an ancient tyrant who freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity, I’ll accept that God can work through tyrants to protect his people

Apparently, POTUS got some new information. Maybe YOU should buy a clue, too.

You know what’s funny is our local Putinists would be fine with Putin removing Assad. They are self loathing westerns who don’t care a bit about Christians in Syria as long as the US withdraws into an isolationist pose.

What’s really hilarious is the idea that we are going to protect Christians in the middle east by the US withdrawing. No doubt the Death to America Iran is spending billions in Syria to “save the Christians”.

No I’m not.
I’m saying Assad is a murderous thug that is not really protecting “Christians” (up for debate whether or not they’re Christ believers in the first place since they have no problem backing him). He’s muslim, and could care a less about protecting christians - especially true Christians who reject Satanic Islam.

Believe what you want. I stand with Israel since Genesis 12:3 still stands. You’re actually going against that verse by standing with Assad & being duped that he’s ok. He hates Israel and wants their destruction. Maybe you do too?

These creeps are even more deceived than a nudist tree-worshipping environmentalist. That Putin is good. That Assad is good. Hysterical! Kiss that image.
