Inspector General Launches Probe on Alleged DOJ, FBI Abuse of Surveillance Law

The Department of Justice Office of Inspector General announced Wednesday it is launching a review into whether the Justice Department and the FBI violated the law and applicable policies when using the Steele dossier to obtain a surveillance warrant on a former Trump campaign member. DOJ Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz is launching the review in response to requests from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and members of Congress, according to a statement.

The probe will review information that was known to the DOJ and the FBI at the time the warrant applications were filed from or about Christopher Steele, the ex-British spy who authored the dossier.

The DOJ and FBI did not tell the secret court that issued the surveillance warrant on former Trump adviser Carter Page that the dossier was funded by the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

As confirmed by a memo issued by the House Intelligence Committee’s Democrat members, the DOJ and FBI — who submitted the warrant application and renewals — only vaguely referenced the dossier’s political origins. The application said Steele:

“was approached an identified U.S. Person, who indicated to Source #1 [Steele] that a U.S. based law firm had hired the identified U.S. Person to conduct research regarding Candidate #1’s ties to Russia. (The identified U.S. Person and Source #1 have a long-standing business relationship.) The identified U.S. Person hired Source #1 to conduct this research into Candidate #1’s ties to Russia. The FBI speculates that the identified U.S. Person was likely looking for information that could be used to discredit Candidate #1’s campaign.”

Still need a Special Counsel, the IG cannot issue subpoenas, he cannot compel testimony from folks no longer in the department, and he cannot prosecute.

It nice to get to work on it, but if i you are going to get to the bottom of it you need subpoenas, you need to talk to folks that have left, you need to be able to prosecute.

“Still need a Special Counsel, the IG cannot issue subpoenas”

Exactly. IMHO we need a special council to look into this.

so prosecute the agents who worked on this, everyone of them. Start putting the ambitious peons in prison and others will not be so willing to do those A-holes at the tops bidding.

We have to start somewhere, top down isn’t working.

Let’s try bottom-up and see if accomplishes something.

IMO

Yes, but the IG is working with a House committee, which "can" issue subpoenas. I think tighter oversight will result than from s "special prosecutor".

The OIG isn't doing the House committees any favors, he is stonewalling the House committees. The OIG has 1.3 million documents that the House committees want, and the OIG, along with the FBI and the DOJ are stonewalling those documents.

And they are stonewalling Congress, denying them witnesses such as Strzok, Page, Baker, Priestap, Ohr, Rybicki...etc.

The alleged horse left the barn long ago. Facts are documented. The investigation is to bury the really nasty stuff implicating Obama and Clinton. Those are the terms.

Bill Mitchell, who is an avid supporter of President Trump, has been tweeting that Jeff Sessions has formally told Mueller that he cannot go beyond his jurisdiction.

He’s also saying that Chuck Grassley let it slip that the DOJ has impaneled a jury for an investigation, not sure which one specifically.

How wonderful to hear that things are beginning to happen at the DOJ and by Sessions to rein in Mueller and investigate the Deep State’s scandals.

‘Bill Mitchell, who is an avid supporter of President Trump, has been tweeting that Jeff Sessions has formally told Mueller that he cannot go beyond his jurisdiction.’

Bill Mitchell’s heart is in the right place but this is wrong. Sessions cannot supervise Mueller bc he recused himself. Rosenstein has full and sole oversight of Mueller.
