I would suggest looking at the Florida Everglades. The Everglades are a lot like a swamp and include some swamp. Scattered throughout the swamp are hummocks, raised areas, islands of sorts. Some are quite large and support a variety of both plant and animal life.
Bolton is or perhaps dwells on a hummock. The swamp is all around him and he not only knows it well, but thrives on it.
Hows that?
