Suddenly lots of people are waking up and asking themselves questions about Facebook. How much data am I sharing with the social media giant? Did I really give permission for it to be collected and stored?
And, even more seriously, have I handed over my friends' data to be stored on some Californian server?
I am one of those people and what I've discovered has left me somewhat shocked. Over the weekend I got hold of my Facebook data. It's easy enough, you go to settings, then general account settings and click on download my data.
An hour or so later an email arrived with a link to click and I was downloading a 675MB folder chronicling all of my life on the network since I signed up in 2007.
At first sight there was nothing very troubling - I would expect all the photos and videos I'd ever posted to be there, and scrolling down my timeline provided an entertaining glimpse of my life over the last decade.
I cannot remember what happened when I set up my Facebook account back in 2007 - in those naive days I could well have clicked yes when invited to upload my contacts so that I could see who else was part of this new young community. So, my fault I suppose.
Then I noticed that at the top of the list were some numbers that cannot have been sucked into the Facebook machine a decade ago because I had only added them in recent weeks.
So this means that every time I enter a new number into my phone's database, it somehow ends up with Facebook - the company is in effect monitoring me.

And that’s just what they admit to.

FB is “free.” Nothing is free. When someone says “free” ask how you are paying for it.
I signed up for a fake Facebook account once, because I needed a Facebook account to comment on a web site.
I am sure I’m not the only person who ever did this.
I wonder how many of the billion plus Facebook accounts are fake, or are inactive, because someone had signed up but haven’t used the account?
About once a day....I’ll get this Google message that they ‘noticed’ that I was near such-and-such store and I should take a picture of the interior.
The thing is....I’m in Germany and bit-by-byte...they know within 100 ft where I’m walking.
I’ve never been on FB or Twitter; but I wonder how many other concerns, even just vendors that we deal with, keep information like this. They know whenever I look at a product on a website...
Beyond disturbing.
Shut. It. Down.
The thing to know about Facebook. Users are not the customers. Users are the product.
“Ive never been on FB or Twitter”
Ever clicked on a link to either? At least if you’re ON Facebook you can get an idea what info they have on you. I’d bet that they have info on a lot of people that never joined.
Monitoring is too polite of a word.
Facebook is spying on its users. This is an outrage.
We also have to ask....
<><>did the Obama campaign get any of this clandestine spying info?
<><> what exactly did Zuckerburg do to help Obama gt elected?
More accurately, the users’ IP is the product. I just saw this story, that FB harvested call logs from Android users for two years. Wow. I was a FB user for some time, but got off a couple of months ago. Never installed the app on my phone, though. It’s scary how they not only grab most/all your data, but also that of those you “touch”.

Facebook is free to users
Facebook’s founder is a billionaire.
It’s naive to think he and his company became so large and successful on Zuck’s free service.
Dude! I read your comment and the first thing I thought of was Soylent Green. People are not the customers. People are the product.
They’re the NSA’s front. Wonder how you can find out what others have posted about you. Of course, when you have any info sent to your email, well, they now have that, too.
A big howdy sent out to the dude behind the screen, NSA, Big Brother and FB. Yoo hoo, I’m on FR but then y’all aready knew that.
Well, duh!
Also, they are not "in effect" monitoring you. They are monitoring you.
Im shocked! Does this mean that the NSA and others are also hard wired to FB?
I had FarceBook for about a year (well, really two years but I didn’t use it much the 2nd year). I used a fictitious name to start it up and an equally fictitious email account to verify it. At the time they weren’t demanding phone numbers.
I never used my meat world name, phone number, address, or any other info other than befriending a couple of people. My sole purpose was to monitor my daughters activities.
Once that was no longer necessary I abandoned it other than reading news articles. I made the mistake of coming to a business owners aid when confronted by a gaggle of lefty agitators who were making fake Yelp criticisms of his shop (because he was a butcher and they were vegans). FarceBook froze my account and demanded personal identification. I told them to go chase themselves.
I wonder how much info they accumulated on me?
The first time someone told me about Facebook and urged me to join, I said:
“It sounds like a government monitored, if not government sponsored, personal information mining operation.”
That was nine or ten years ago. I have seen nothing in the ensuing years to dissuade me from my initial analysis, but plenty to justify it.
