Facebook stock plunges 6% after FTC launches probe of data scandal
CNBC ^

Shares of Facebook cratered 6 percent Monday after the Federal Trade Commission announced it is investigating the company's data practices in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica leak of 50 million users' information.

"The FTC takes very seriously recent press reports raising substantial concerns about the privacy practices of Facebook. Today, the FTC is confirming that it has an open non-public investigation into these practices," the agency said in a statement.

The FTC declined to confirm last week that it was investigating Facebook, including whether it violated a consent decree the tech company signed with the agency in 2011.

The decree required that Facebook notify users and receive explicit permission before sharing personal data beyond their specified privacy settings.

A violation of the consent decree could carry a penalty of $40,000 per violation.

I still do not understand why this is such a big deal when 0bama did exactly the same thing in ‘08 and ‘12 and was proclaimed the digital god of the new age. I must be missing something but I can’t figure out what it is. Partially because I care so little, no doubt.

Gee, where the hell was this concern in 2012 when Obama did it?

I'm not bothered. I didn't use FB until a year and a half ago, when it became necessary to stay informed about local issues, including emergency situations. Locally, this small town had a despicable Council doing all sorts of underhanded stuff to enrich themselves at the expense of the character of the town. FB provided sites, including ones with important levels of privacy, to discuss alternatives to the Council.

My impression: c'mon. Of course I'm not going to put anything on FB that the whole world can't see. I'm not going to buy anything there or "share" anything. They don't influence anyone's vote, because if anything people get more set in their ways when issues come up. Nobody goes to FB to change their mind. In the survey they had users fill out, my biggest complaint was advertisers who make their "sponsored" ads look way too much like news. My biggest suggestion was that FB run its own impartial news service in the right hand column.

Like him or hate him, Zuckerburg's the best person to fix things. Otherwise, we'll end up in the claws of government control. Keep in mind it was FB where Free Republic had the site hosted when we were all going crazy without FR. That site still exists on FB.

Too bad he won’t have his pal Bambam to run to this time for a bailout!

Guess we’ll find out if F-book is “too big to fail.”

Perhaps the FTC, the FEC, and SEC could wake up and take a look at Google (Alphabet) and examine their search engine algorithms in use during the 2016 campaign. I'm sure they had much more impact than anything the Russians could have attempted to do. Since about 99% of the dollars contributed by Alphabet employees to candidates, or to PAC's, were pro-Hillary, I would be very suspicious of the algorithms that were being used during the campaign. If any thumb was on the scales, it was on the side of helping Hillary by de-emphasizing negative information about her, and emphasizing negative information about DJT. That would constitute an illegal in-kind contribution to Hillary's campaign.

I don't know either, but I am certainly enjoying it.

Only 6%? Should be 60%. Facebook is evil. Satan sits on the board of directors.

I know. Almost as if there were insider trading involved. He gets to save himself a few billion here, a few billion there, but...no problem.

All the “little” people who those laws are written specifically for just have to suck it up.

Boy, does this steam me.

WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE Cambridge Analytica worked for the Trump campaign, and either stole, hacked, or through some other nefarious way mined personal information from 50 million Americans and used it to target ads on Facebook to people likely receptive to them.......activities that were lauded as leading edge stuff when Democrats did it.

WHERE WAS ZUCKERBERG when the Obama campaign used Facebook as a campaign tool in 2012?

Buying another used tee shirt?

Obama suggested to his supporters: “Why not try sifting through my supporters’ Facebook pages in search of friends
who might be on my campaign’s list of the most persuadable voters? Then my campaign could ask the self-identified supporters to bring their undecided friends along.”

The Facebook looting, as the Obamatons saw it, could also (A) get supporters to urge friends to register to vote,
(B) to vote early, (C) to volunteer, and, (D) donate, observed a 2013 NYT story about Obama’s reelection campaign.

Add to that obscenity, the confession by a former Obama campaign parasite that they basically took whatever they wanted from Facebook, with Facebook’s blessing.

As the criticism of Trump escalates in recent reports, you recognize that the ultra-liberal Zuckerberg has stupidly enforced double standards, never expecting to get caught.

Let’s see....last report was that Facebook lost $50 BILLION in value......and counting.

If so, that could easy to track down for possible/probable use of prior knowledge.

Yep, 1.14 million shares according to THIS STORY. Apparently it was a scheduled sale, so no one's screaming Insider Trading just yet, but he did clear 20 bucks a share over current price. Nice if you can get it.
