"All you need to know why this was a bad bill is to look at the roll call," a long-time Republican lobbyist emailed me Saturday, referring to the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending law.
Of course, he's right.
President Donald Trump reluctantly signed the $1.3 trillion spending bill Friday, but a careful review of the crucial Senate vote shows it was Democratic members, not Republicans, that actually passed the bill.
In another major embarrassment to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, his own Republican caucus opposed the very bill he negotiated.
The omnibus bill passed the Senate by a vote of 65 to 32 (with three abstentions).
Of the 65 "for" votes, 39 Democratic senators supported the bill with only 25 Republicans signing on. Republicans control the Senate with 51 seats.
Of the 32 "against" votes, 23 were Republicans, including stalwart conservatives such as Republican Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Rand Paul of Kentucky,Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Mike Lee of Utah.
Democrats were so excited about the bill's passage, they could not contain their glee.
"We Democrats feel very good because so many of our priorities for the middle class were included," beamed Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York.
Schumer was especially happy because chief among his priorities was the funding for a $30 billion the infrastructure project in New York known as the Gateway program.

Mitch is not embarrassed that is a joke. Hes a treasonous POS just like Ryan.
Im not so sure that McConnell is embarrassed, or embarrassable for that matter.
Also, I’ll give patriots an amendment to the Constitution for term limits, if patriots give me an amendment to give the individual states the specific power recall bad-apple federal lawmakers.
In fact, the recall amendment should give 2/3 of all state legislatures the power to recall a lawmaker since the citizens and illegal aliens who actually elected the person might be asleep at the wheel.
Also, until the states wise up and amend the Constitution to prohibit political party support of federal lawmakers, please consider the following.
And just as both Houses of Congress have the constitutional authority to expel bad-apple members on a 2/3 majority vote, the political parties need to give the power to expel members from the party.
Also give ordinary party members the power to petition party leaders to expel disloyal party members.
I am not sure that everyone understands what Trump just did. He Pelosied the Democrats. Remember when Nancy Pelosi said “we will have to pass the bill before you know what is in it.” No one read the Omnibus bill. The devil is in the details. The first two things I noticed was that the Taylor Force Act, which will defund Palestinian terrorism from the US, and that the US Corps of Engineers will build the wall - fully funded by the US Army. I believe this is what Q referred to as Red Castle, Green Castle. The Corpse, as Obama referred to it, is the one large Agency that is capable of building ‘the Wall’ with Independent Financing. I coined the term “Pelosizing’ to refer to spending money without a budget by Presidential decree. This is an “omnibus bill”, not a budget.
Without guns there would be no human rights! Anywhere on the planet that people have any amount of freedom and liberty it is because other people before them used guns to insure that they would have it!
Trump needs to stop chumming around and calling them Mitch and Paul. Trump needs to start nicknaming them as he often successfully does, with the enemies of his agenda.
David Perdue of GA also voted nay.
Signed by the Republican spender in chief.
Maybe the corrupt democrat Deep State has ‘the goods’ on Mitch McConnell... I wouldn’t put blackmail beyond them...
They were _counting_ on Trump to veto it so they can tell their constituents that mean ol' Trump is withholding their lunch money. Trump might have vetoed itif McConnell and Ryan would learn to work with Trump rather than play games against him.
What was the Republican leadership in Congress hoping to achieve by putting forth a bill that was more popular with Democrats than Republicans?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The loss of the House and possibly the Senate, but that is harder to screw up because there are so many D seats up.
Mitch is getting his judges through though.
It’s a good thing Trump is not Jesus or else he would be crucified by the democats..I mean the Romans.
The Pubes want no part of leadership, as followers they have everyone else to blame.
It is impossible for a turd to feel embarrassment. McConnell is a turd.
Schumer may, in fact, get only a sock in his mouth.
There are other threads on this forum over this weekend that argue Trump has authority over the money provided in the bill, if true that raises a number of questions, primarily:
1. Does Trump actually have such authority?
2. If so, will he use such authority to further his campaign promises? (My money says he will for the larger part, with some spent to purchase loyalty from wavering R's.)
3. Which of the R's knowingly participated in Trump's plan and voted to extract max funding from the D's?
4. Will Trump name those R's in order to rehab their credentials prior to the next election?
Unless Trump identifies McConnell as a key figure in the plan, the turtle's nonaction on federal judge appointments in return for the R "support" cements his ineffectiveness.
Your info may be more current than mine. I thought there were a couple of dozen yet to be considered?
Weve been saying that for YEARS, but for some reason, hes still in power.
An Omnibus bill is not set in stone. While I am not counting on the following happening, it CAN be modified with additional legislation. Things like moving funds for a tunnel to funds for a wall. Things like cutting some of the spending.
They do not want US to stop the illegal alien inundation.
That’s what everything is about.
Trump threatens the Cheap Labor Express.
One more amnesty and they have will have successfully stolen the country from the citizens.
Very slowly.
