Zuck apologizes for Cambridge Analytica scandal with full-page print ad

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has taken out a full page ad in the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and six UK papers today to apologize Cambridge Analytica scandal, according to CNN’s Brian Stelter.

The ad starts in bold letters, saying:

“We have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can’t, we don’t deserve it.”

The ad was published on Sunday, following Zuck’s first public acknowledgement of the issue on Facebook and a subsequent media tour earlier this week.

Congress has also put Mark Zuckerberg on notice to potentially come speak with them, with Senator Kennedy of Louisiana encouraging Zuck to “do the common sense thing and roll up his sleeves and take a meaningful amount of time talking to [them].”

For those of you still unsure what’s going on with Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, i you can see a full play-by-play here.

Here’s the full transcript from the print ad:

We have a responsibility to protect your information. If we can’t, we don’t deserve it.

You may have heard about a quiz app built by a university researcher that leaked Facebook data of millions of people in 2014. This was a breach of trust, and I’m sorry we didn’t do more at the time. We’re now taking steps to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

We’ve already stopped apps like this from getting so much information. Now we’re limiting the data apps get when you sign in using Facebook.

We’re also investigating every single app that had access to large amounts of data before we fixed this. We expect there are others. And when we find them, we will ban them and tell everyone affected.

Finally, we’ll remind you of which apps you’ve given access to your information — so you can shut off the ones you don’t want anymore.

Thank you for believing in this community. I promise to do better for you.

Mark Zuckerberg

Start typing “how to close your” on Google and the 2nd suggested autocomplete is “how to close your Facebook account”.

Just make sure you don't type "Google" on Google, or else you'll break the Internet. ;)

Someone with an ego/bank account that big is not going to apologize to the little people. Too demeaning.

I must admit this whole Affair has me completely and totally baffled. When Barack Obama use these exact same techniques in 2008 and 2012 he was hailed as the digital god of the new age. Somehow When Donald Trump uses exactly the same methods, he is reviled I truly don’t get it. I truly don’t get how the readership of whoever reads these things and thinks that they understand what’s going on can hold these two thoughts in their brain at the same time.

The ‘beauty’ of all this is that the Cambridge people were NOT involved with the Trump campaign, the ‘don’t go near the window because he may fly away’ Cambridge rep virtually said he would ‘just die(sigh)’ if he even IMAGINED that the DT people were going to use HIS data.

Yet, we continue to ‘blame’ PDT & the Russians (what happened to the ‘more flexibility with Vlad AFTER the election and ‘Mitt - the 80s called Russia is our FRIEND) for everything ‘wrong’ with the world...

I’m starting to think that a relatively new school of blame-shifting is being developed here. For example in the park land shooting the FBI screwed up; the local police screwed up; the school board who eliminated Cruz’s many misdemeanor violations while at the school screwed up, and yet the person or the entity to be blamed; the NRA....had nothing at all to do with the shooting. If this data breach and it was no breach is part of Facebook’s business model is such a horrible thing then really it is Donald Trump. But that would make sense so what we have to do now is to blame someone who took the personal data exactly as he said that he would and exactly as you agreed that he would when you signed up to exploit what you are ready to reveal about yourself... and make that person out to be an evil door. I have no love for Facebook I think it’s ending. But what he did with that data there’s nothing different than what he said he was going to do with that data, and all of these chickenshits who are screaming about this would be praising him to the High Heavens if Hillary Clinton had won.

Did he also apologize for giving Obamadork unfettered access to all Fakebook users in 2012?

He would not have had to ‘apologize’ if facebook had been used to help hilLIARy win- they would have been celebrating it.

Poor move on his part, this just establishes how serious a problem he has on his hands. But as I want Facebook to die and everyone involved to go bankrupt and the executive tier prosecuted for their extremely shady business model. No one ever gave informed consent to anywhere near this level of invasiveness and personal exposure to arbitrary third parties.

The only way he makes money is by selling your information. What he’s saying on the sc is he’s sorry someone stole it from him then sold it. He doesn’t say he’ll stop selling the data.

FB peaked a long time ago. I’ve looked up old friends who haven’t posted since 2012 and never check their private message.

Exactly. The only problem with this particular - and almost certainly fully authorized - data pull, is that the info was used effectively to a cause hated by the Left.

They do it all the time themselves, Obama was the master of it, but that was never a problem before.

If Facebook hadn’t already alienated conservatives with censorship, they’d be able to find support now. But they did and therefore they are without friends, and that’s a recipe for rapid collapse.
