Full title: Man who trained girlfriend's pet pug to give Nazi salutes on 'Sieg Heil' command is convicted of posting offensive message online
A man who taught his girlfriend's "cute, wee" pet pug to do Nazi salutes has been found guilty of a race hate crime.
Mark Meechan, 29, who filmed the dog, named Buddha, responding to statements such as "Sieg Heil" and "gas the Jews", will be sentenced later today.
Derek O'Carroll found him guilty of communicating a video which was "grossly offensive" because it was anti-Semitic and aggravated by religious prejudice.
Meechan, of Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, claimed the video was made to annoy girlfriend, Suzanne Kelly, 29, and denied any wrongdoing.
The defendant, who said he has lost eight jobs since posting the video, claimed he only intended it to be seen by seven of his friends, who follow his YouTube channel, Count Dankula.

What's a German Shepherd?
Do you mean Alsatian?
BTW, saw photos of Ms. Hillary and B. Obama giving the Nazi salute. But I doubt UK would hold it against them.
I won’t take a position on whether the particular statements constitute one of the very limited types of speech that are not constitutionally protected. What I will say is, go find and watch the offending video. The guy repeats the command “gas the Jews” over and over again while cajoling his girlfriends dog. And I will say, there was nothing funny about it at all, so please don’t use expressions such as “oh, they outlawed humor”. The guy is laughing and he thinks its funny, but it just isn’t.
Worse than a terrible failed attempt at humor is that he posts this video on the internet, where millions of people can and did watch and listen to the phrase “gas the Jews” over and over again as something intended for laughter. As the son of a Holocaust survivor who evaded the gas chambers at Majdanek by the skin of his teeth, I find it sick and disgusting. As it lowers the bar for repeated exterminationist language, I believe it serves to bring actual violence against Jews closer and I would have no problem making specific language like that illegal.
I've seen it written that it's a crime in Germany to claim that the holocaust never happened.Of course to make such a claim is beyond delusional with all the films, photos, eyewitness reports (including from camp survivors like your father) and Nazi documents.I've even heard it said that General Patton, while on an inspection tour of one of the recently liberated camps, became physically ill at what he saw.
It may well be appropriate for German authorities to keep a close eye on such individuals. And it may be appropriate for our authorities to keep an eye on such people here for it seems distinctly possible that such people may be inclined to hurt others...in this case,Jews.
But can we sanction people in *anticipation* of a crime?
“But can we sanction people in *anticipation* of a crime?”
What I am talking about is already a legitimately recognized exception to free speech, among others: incitement. Encouraging violence and, in this case, genocide, is already prohibited. Of course, incitement itself is very narrowly defined in our legal system as conduct that is by its nature an immediate, unquestionable encouragement to violence, not something remote in time and place from, or effect on, the target audience.
A phrase like “gas the Jews” has a special infamous place in history and an unmistakable meaning and purpose. As it happens, I had to do some research regarding my father and came across a letter from the International Red Cross International Tracing Service dated December 21, 1978 which informed my father that they had finally determined that his father was killed at Majdanek on September 25, 1942. Majdanek had just started using its new gas chambers.
I just want Count Dunkula and any fans of his to know: this Jew knows a lot of Jews just like this one that aren’t going to go peacefully next time. If you’ve paid any attention to the Israeli military and clandestine services, Jews can be extremely efficient at eliminating their enemies nowadays.
Stupid brits have no sense of humor. Pathetic excuse of western civilization.
Understood. But my thinking in *this* particular case is that teaching your dog to do stupid things might not rise to the level of a "threat".Although I'm no lawyer I understand that it is,for example,a crime to communicate a threat to a person...even if you have no intention of carrying out the threat.I don't know if that applies to a group...Jews...Christians...atheists...homosexuals,etc.Perhaps it should be.But if such a law were passed I wonder what the Federal courts would think of it
Hitler killed everything and the human race had to climb out from the primordial goo again and OMG these cats are making me okay with it!
Butchy Manklemejster
The sheer ridiculousness of it all just seems to hit me squarely in the funny bone. Does that make me a bad person?
I assume the commenters are in on the joke. Otherwise, some really dumb people.
Oh, absolutely. But there are certainly some who aren’t out there. I don’t know whether to laugh or facepalm at that thought.
England needs a modern day Vlad Tepes.
It almost reads like a Monty Python skit.
And when current events become indistinguishable from Monty Python!
(I know, this isn't a current event, but given the lunacy we see such as EarthFirst group mourning the loss of an old growth tree that was felled by loggers, it isn't hard to imagine there are people out there who would actually have those sentiments!)
Oh, my stars. I remember that. And I gay-run-tee they all voted for the Butchess of Benghazi (OK, maybe a few went for the Castroite Jill Stein).
