Greece Undermining EU-Turkey Migrant Deal, German Report Says

Data published by the German newspaper Die Welt suggest that Greece has been undermining the European Union-Turkey deal signed two years ago to stem the flow of refugees and migrants to the continent.

Citing unnamed officials in Berlin, Brussels and the EU's border agency Frontex, the report alleges that the Greek government has moved a large number of asylum seekers from the Aegean islands to the mainland, effectively preventing their return to Turkey.

The message is that any asylum seeker who manages to land on one of the Greek islands, he can then move on to central Europe, officials told the newspaper.

According to EU figures cited by the newspaper, between March 2016 and January 2018, 62,190 asylum seekers landed on the Aegean islands, of whom 27,635, or 45 percent, were subsequently transferred to mainland Greece.

German officials told the newspaper that only a very small number of people whose asylum request had been turned down by authorities had been returned to Turkey. Greece, the same officials said, is effectively creating an incentive for migrants hoping to enter the continent which could lead to a spike in arrivals.

The monstrous EU/EC has to go. What a piece of agitprop.

So is this the Greeks way of telling the EU that if they keep making Europe open and desirable for these so called "refugees" the Greeks will just let them pass through rather than sending them to Turkey? Kind of an in your face to the EU?

You want to welcome them? Well here they come!

The EU has Greece by its short hairs. If Greece tries to jump ugly, all the EU has to do is cut off money. This is either for domestic Greek consumption, or the Greeks don’t think the EU has the guts to pull the pin.

Wonder if Trump would want to make a deal with Greece. And if so, would the Greeks be willing to pull themselves up by their bootstraps to get out from under the EU....

The Greeks do have a lot of pride though. When they are fat and happy with freebies.

Well, with the ChiComs crawling all over Africa and the Brits, to my mind, a less than reliable ally, I’m thinking it’s time we consider making new arrangements. And Greece, for a variety of reasons, might be a good place to start.

BBell, SC, You do realize that the EU deal with Turkey was that Turkey would take teh migrants? namely that if they landed on the Aegean islands they'd be sent to Turkey.

And now Greece is letting the migrants go further?

From the article itself German officials told the newspaper that only a very small number of people whose asylum request had been turned down by authorities had been returned to Turkey. Greece, the same officials said, is effectively creating an incentive for migrants hoping to enter the continent which could lead to a spike in arrivals.

So Bbell, it is the Greek's way of telling Germany that Greece will send the migrants to Germany. The whole idea was to make Europe NOT so open and desirable to the migrants - i.e that they get pushed to Turkey.

To mewzilla, the EU would be more than happy to let Greece jump. Ditto for cutting it out from the Euro. It's not hanging on to Greece.

And also mewzilla, the Greeks won't trust the USA -- look at the way the Kurds have been left to fend for themselves. They will turn to Russia, the Orthodox power.

There's probably decent money making sure the migrants get transit. There wouldn't be a need for this if the Turks didn't transship the rapeyougees in the first place. That was my point up there, so I think we agree about that. Russia isn't Orthodox, it's a gangland territory, and now in alliance with the Turks and Iranians.

This is just Merkel's and the EU's way of trying to shift attention from the EU/EC policies that brought about the problem.

Russia is Orthodox - Putin may be faking it (I'm pretty sure he is playing it like Stalin did) but the sentiments of the people are clearly pro-Orthodox and pro-helping other Orthodox, like Greece or Cyprus.

The Russians aren't in alliane with Turkey -- Putin is playing Erdogan for Erdogan to get out of NATO and destroy himself. Then putin takes the Dardanelles

As for Iran, its also twofold: a leverage against Turkey and also that the threat to Russia is from Sunni Wahabbis not Shia.
