Through four straight mayoral contests, the Republican line on New York City election ballots has yielded gold: four straight wins for G.O.P. candidates in a city where declared Democrats make up the overwhelming majority of voters.
Those wins have not, however, yielded an obvious successor to Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, whose name -- because of term limits -- will not be on the ballot come November 2009. Indeed, while the city's political elite has long since begun speculating about likely Democratic candidates for 2009, the roster of presumptive Republican aspirants is rather thin.
"I couldn't project who could follow his path, next time, but if it comes down to a large sword with a stone in it, maybe we'll be surprised by who attempts to remove the sword from the stone," said James A. Ortenzio, the Manhattan Republican chairman, who like Mr. Bloomberg was once a registered Democrat. "This is a flexible Republican Party. It evolves."

Who knew that Bloomberg was a Republican?
Bloomberg was a Northeastern centrist Republican.
You have to remember that Bloomberg is a law and order centrist.
He was popular on Staten Island, New York City’s most whitest and conservative borough!
GOP doesn’t, also, mean Conservative, especially within, almost, ALL U.S. cities.
He was a leftist Democrat who ran on the Republican line because he didn’t want to negotiate the racialist zoo politics on the Democrat line. He was never a Republican.
Yeah, a model RINO.
I will take RINO governors in CA, OR, WA, IL, MD, NY, CT, RI, MA and VA over Dem ones any day.
Don’t forget NJ. VA is blue now.
And thanks to those RINO Governors, you get all the Democrat policies and lots of Democrats elected while you help to marginalize and atrophy Conservatism and real Republican candidates. If you approve of that, sir, you're on the wrong website.
Commie Red, thanks exclusively to the cancerous NoVA.
lol truly conservative candidates aren’t going to win those states. you need to get real.
How does running left-wingers as Republicans further the Conservative agenda, sir ?
