UPDATE: Thanks to our friends at Twitchy, there are some people who think this horrific bridge collapse is Trump’s fault—and that he should be impeached for it
Brand new unopened Pedestrian Bridge collapses in Miami. The era of Trump is turning America into a corrupt 3rd World country. Florida needs to be run by Democrats, the Republicans just make up their own versions of reality. #TheResistance pic.twitter.com/Cd0V0800cE— james johnson (@jimmyhawk9) March 15, 2018
Horrible tragedy in Florida. Bridge collapse. I don't know what regulations were followed or not followed. Way to early to say what happened here.
I can say that Trump has gone out of his way to loosen building regulations. He has openly bragged about it.— Carol Baker (@Carol_Baker73) March 15, 2018
Trump gets rid of regulations on building things and a bridge collapsed thanks Trump Impeach him now— Roger bomkamp (@bomkamp_roger) March 15, 2018

Several people are reported dead after a 950-ton pedestrian bridge at Florida International University in Miami. (via CBS Miami):
Florida International University’s (FIU) massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon killing several people.
The 950-ton bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
Florida Highway Patrol confirms several people are dead due to the collapse. They also said several cars have been crushed.
At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

In a statement, FIU said,“We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time we are still involved in the rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them.”
Gov. Rick Scott has been in contact with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez. He is also en route to FIU to be briefed by law enforcement and university officials.

Terrible news coming from Miami as a pedestrian bridge has collapsed at @FIU and multiple deaths are reported. We will pray for the victims and the entire Panther community.— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) March 15, 2018
I have spoken with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez about the pedestrian bridge collapse at FIU. I will be in constant communication with law enforcement throughout the day.— Rick Scott (@FLGovScott) March 15, 2018
FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg had praised the completion of the bridge in a now-deleted tweet on March 13 saying, “FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully.” Structural monitoring was conducted on March 12.
Huh. Wonder why this Tweet just disappeared a minute ago. @wupton pic.twitter.com/8zH8omceGp— Gabriel S. Sanchez (@OpusPublicum) March 15, 2018

We’ll keep you updated.
Thanks. That’s a whole nother can of worms then.
I just saw a picture on the news and it looks like the center support column punched right through the slab with NO largeer top bar steel added over the column to resist failure of the tension face, NO sheer studs either. Also the fracture patterns of the concrete were absolute crumbling and not from sheer or flexural stress. if the concrete was mature the fracture patterns would be larger, not crombles like a cookie. It looks like the concrete was not fully cured and not ready for stress loading. Someone mentioned sensors. I wonder if the engineers tried to rely on maturity meters embedded in the concrete and not on back up Field Cure ASTM C-39 compression tests using flexural beam specimens, all common mistakes leading to structural disasters [/speculation]

“Workers at the scene report that Thursday the bridge was reportedly undergoing some sort of stress test.”
while traffic was going under the bridge? o....k....
I cannot believe those idiot buffoons are blaming the president for a bridge collapsing. As if that’s a part of his job description! Since when does a POTUS oversee construction of pedestrian bridges? They call for impeachment if the man so much as sneezes into the wind. Where’s the hankie, he didn’t cover his nose when he sneezed, impeach! Arghh. Anyways, I am sad that people died. Wonder what sort of group built this?
This is in miami. Made me think maybe they cutcorners and built it like how some central american contractors cut corners on projects. like no or not enough rebar and structural reinforcements. Then when something hits it hard enough it cant transfer/absorb the force and just breaks apart. So if a crane hit it on one end and it couldnt take it it would ripple through the whole design and cause cascading failures all along the bridge.
look at this pic where the crane is, the bridge on the left side.
it looks like a huge block of something is on top of thenbridge where it steeply goes to the road.
i wonder if that block is what that crane dropped on the bridge, and then they moved the crane back out of the way.
Tear down the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg, Verazzano and 59th Street bridges. Golden Gate, too. They could collapse any minute, killing thousands.
I see Rubio is out defending the contractor, the Munilla family. Bet they have him in their pocket.
Hmm... Your speculation almost makes you sound like an expert. Are you an engineer or materials science guru?
My knowledge of bridge building is limited to some lessons learned from the Tacoma Narrows bridge.
Two companies in FIU bridge construction accused of shoddy work in previous collapses

According to a report in the Miami New Times, lead contractor Munilla Construction Management was sued less than two weeks ago over
Obviously corrupt Cuban expatriate contractors. We all know that those people are all criminals and Republicans and Elian Gonzalez kidnappers...and...and...racists./s
Also tear down all bridges between the US and Canada! If they collapse, it could be an international incident! As for bridges between Mexico and the US, the wall is going to make all intercourse between Americans and Mexicans impossible anyway. So a bridge collapse might be a good thing./s
We need bridge control.
Yes, they were performing a test of the bridge when this happened.
The span was already under great stress when they removed the wheeled shoring that they used to put it in place. I can not imagine doing that with a large span that doesnt have its support structure in place yet.
STRESS TESTING while civilian traffic passes underneath?? Idiocy abounds these days. They may have been testing something, but I doubt it was the bridge structure. Unless they waited to see if their fine work would fail at the construction site rather in the shop construction yard. (Just a common Naval Engineer thinking).
Quantity / quality of the steel / rebar used? Slump and actual cement makeup of the constructing materials? Its just a pedestrian bridge, right? Do we have to get the slump to less than 0.5”?
Math is HARD. Really trying to stay non-snarky on this, at least till after my 1st cup of joe. And I applaud the bridge maker and engineer firm that is responsible for this for at least maintaining an internet presence because they are getting slaughtered on their FB page.
This is still in my category of, “JUST WOW! How could something like that happen? TOTALLY FUBAR!”
At lest they didnt have bamboo scaffolding built to help shore it up. Gravity never sleeps.
“he saw a crane drop a heavy object on one end of the bridge”
There seem to be cameras everywhere nowadays. Hard to believe there isn’t/wasn’t one somewhere around there to capture this if it happened.
There could be but they're not talking aout the cause at this point. I just reported what I heard., not saying it's true.
“I just reported what I heard., not saying it’s true.”
Oh, I know. I was just commenting that it wouldn’t surprise me if there is video somewhere. Whether or not TPTB want to admit it, or show it, is another story altogether.
Answer: Yes, he failed to stop the Obama "TIGER" project.
