UPDATE: Thanks to our friends at Twitchy, there are some people who think this horrific bridge collapse is Trump’s fault—and that he should be impeached for it

Horrible tragedy in Florida. Bridge collapse. I don't know what regulations were followed or not followed. Way to early to say what happened here.

I can say that Trump has gone out of his way to loosen building regulations. He has openly bragged about it.— Carol Baker (@Carol_Baker73) March 15, 2018

Several people are reported dead after a 950-ton pedestrian bridge at Florida International University in Miami. (via CBS Miami):

Florida International University’s (FIU) massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon killing several people.

The 950-ton bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.

Florida Highway Patrol confirms several people are dead due to the collapse. They also said several cars have been crushed.

At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

In a statement, FIU said,“We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time we are still involved in the rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them.”

Gov. Rick Scott has been in contact with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez. He is also en route to FIU to be briefed by law enforcement and university officials.

Terrible news coming from Miami as a pedestrian bridge has collapsed at @FIU and multiple deaths are reported. We will pray for the victims and the entire Panther community.— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) March 15, 2018

FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg had praised the completion of the bridge in a now-deleted tweet on March 13 saying, “FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully.” Structural monitoring was conducted on March 12.

Scrubbing furiously...webcashe has this for now. Video interview and discussion.

“Suarez reached out to the construction company for comment, but hasn’t heard back, however a vehicle labeled “Structural Technologies VSL” was among those crushed by the bridge. The company manufactures post-tensioning systems for bridges.”

Wouldn’t the state government be responsible for regulating such structures? How is Trump responsible? (Rhetorical question.)

I would think that a tower that’s supposed to support the entire structure would be the first thing to go up.

Back in the days of the old Soviet Union, I remember a news segment on something like 60 Minutes where they described how the Russian people had learned how to read between the lines for actual nuggets of information.

Our lamestream media is now full-boar Soviet.

Flash to the liberal Democrats and H.S. Snowflake puppets. The NRA don’t build bridges. Kapish?

Foreign civil engineering works wonders, eh? Just keep pushing our straight young men of European ancestry out of the universities.

Leonor Flores ’98 is a project executive and one of 63 FIU alumni who work for MCM, the construction firm building the FIU-Sweetwater UniversityCity Bridge, which will further connect FIU and its northerly neighbor, the City of Sweetwater. She was excited to share her work with her family, especially Michelle, who is interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) in school.

Michelle said she might want to follow in her parents’ footsteps and go to FIU when the time comes, and that it was fascinating to see her mom’s work in action. “I’m interested in the architecture and the design of the bridge, and the math portion of it,” she said.

Said Leonor: “It’s very important for me as a woman and an engineer to be able to promote that to my daughter, because I think women have a different perspective. We’re able to put in an artistic touch and we’re able to build, too.”

Students in FIU’s engineering and architecture programs came out at 5 a.m. to watch the theory they learn in class take form in a real-world application.

Civil engineering doctoral student Dewan Hossain said: “I would say this is magic. In five hours using that ABC technology and sensors, the bridge is already there. In the classroom, we learn about the design, the construction, the safety – that’s a big issue – and here we’re seeing it actually happening. Here we are establishing a real, practical application of what we learn in the classroom. I would encourage more students to come view these types of projects to enhance what they learn.”

Impose Affirmative Action quotas on civil engineering programs and this is what you get

It was being stress tested when it collapsed. Why in the world did they open the street beneath it to traffic while it was being stressed tested.

That is insane.

I heard that too. Why was traffic being allowed in the lanes below during a stress test? Insanity.

This gives me a big clue as to the "root cause", which appears to be a priority to fulfill the words quoted here,

I would say this is magic. "In five hours using that ABC technology and sensors, the bridge is already there."

The PR ran roughshod over the engineering. And now where are they? Not counting the eight or so crushed to death?

Well, right. It was ( apparently ) conceived of as a pedestrian space, or whatever. That is to say, an attractive area, not a narrow path. Great concept, but obviously the execution failed. They got ahead of themselves, one way or another.

Heads will roll.

I wonder why there was no proof loading before the structure was raised.

Because for some inexplicable reason they put up the bridge span without putting up the suspension wires and pylon that were needed to hold up the bridge. Who would think that is was OK to put up the heavy part of the suspension bridge without suspending it?

Probably like High Line Park in Manhattan-——which is awesome.
