UPDATE: Thanks to our friends at Twitchy, there are some people who think this horrific bridge collapse is Trump’s fault—and that he should be impeached for it
Brand new unopened Pedestrian Bridge collapses in Miami. The era of Trump is turning America into a corrupt 3rd World country. Florida needs to be run by Democrats, the Republicans just make up their own versions of reality. #TheResistance pic.twitter.com/Cd0V0800cE— james johnson (@jimmyhawk9) March 15, 2018
Horrible tragedy in Florida. Bridge collapse. I don't know what regulations were followed or not followed. Way to early to say what happened here.
I can say that Trump has gone out of his way to loosen building regulations. He has openly bragged about it.— Carol Baker (@Carol_Baker73) March 15, 2018
Trump gets rid of regulations on building things and a bridge collapsed thanks Trump Impeach him now— Roger bomkamp (@bomkamp_roger) March 15, 2018

Several people are reported dead after a 950-ton pedestrian bridge at Florida International University in Miami. (via CBS Miami):
Florida International University’s (FIU) massive new pedestrian bridge collapsed Thursday afternoon killing several people.
The 950-ton bridge, located at 109th Ave and 8th Street, collapsed on a number of cars.
Florida Highway Patrol confirms several people are dead due to the collapse. They also said several cars have been crushed.
At least one person was taken as a trauma alert to the hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Police telling me there are “mass casualties” after bridge at FIU collapses to the ground. @MiamiHerald— Monique O. Madan (@MoniqueOMadan) March 15, 2018
In a statement, FIU said,“We are shocked and saddened about the tragic events unfolding at the FIU-Sweetwater pedestrian bridge. At this time we are still involved in the rescue efforts and gathering information. We are working closely with authorities and first responders on the scene. We will share updates as we have them.”
Gov. Rick Scott has been in contact with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez. He is also en route to FIU to be briefed by law enforcement and university officials.

Terrible news coming from Miami as a pedestrian bridge has collapsed at @FIU and multiple deaths are reported. We will pray for the victims and the entire Panther community.— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) March 15, 2018
I have spoken with Miami-Dade County Police Chief Juan Perez about the pedestrian bridge collapse at FIU. I will be in constant communication with law enforcement throughout the day.— Rick Scott (@FLGovScott) March 15, 2018
FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg had praised the completion of the bridge in a now-deleted tweet on March 13 saying, “FIU is about building bridges and student safety. This project accomplishes our mission beautifully.” Structural monitoring was conducted on March 12.
Huh. Wonder why this Tweet just disappeared a minute ago. @wupton pic.twitter.com/8zH8omceGp— Gabriel S. Sanchez (@OpusPublicum) March 15, 2018

We’ll keep you updated.
Built with labor of illegal immigrants.
That was what I was thinking - sleazeball (Dem connected) contractor low-balls the bid and then uses Chinese cement and Chinese steel to pull a profit - the illegals working on the structure is just bonus money
Next time just dig I nice little tunnel UNDER the highway.
supposed eye witness told Shepard Smith on Fox News that he saw a crane drop a heavy object on one end of the bridge, causing it to collapse. He said the crane was then moved. This was not confirmed at news conferences which, as is usually the case in the initial stages of such events, gave very little information.
...
False flag...Chinese steel also, likely...no accidents exist.
So maybe 80 feet at most?
That was not a bridge. That was the equivalent of the 1X6 board I pushed across the stream at age 7 when I was hoping to not get my feet wet. (all of me got wet).
That bridge was obviously not designed and built by a Nat Taggart, (or by Dagny Taggart and Hank Rearden).
Looks more like something Jim Taggart and Wesley Mouch would design with the primary intent of ripping off the taxpayers.
I read somewhere that it was 150 ft long.
Terrible. RIP.
Time to ban those bridges.
Lowest bid by a minority contractor....
This was no simple pedestrian bridge. It was 30 ft wide for walking and biking. It had some kind of cover so it could also be used for spectators(???). Design pictures also showed the vertical support was not going to be in the middle of the road but off to one side of the road. If that would have been the middle of the bridge, might that mean that half of the bridge was over grass, not the road? Sounds rather extravagent to me.
If its a suspension bridges where are the suspensions?

I think you’re right!
We need to ban assault bridges. No one needs a military-grade bridge!
I bet this bridge was full semi and didn’t have stop signs or stop lights. I bet people could just walk across it without being stopped, full semi auto.
We need to ban them.
Ed
I wonder why there was no proof loading before the structure was raised.
A wise person once said “you can’t fix stupid”.
The engineering department originally did not possess enough diversity. After adding a couple of aspiring rap singers the engineering plans were approved. Also the cousin of the persons responsible for disbursing the funds was able to purchase materials at a great discount.
I’ve been saying for some time now to be careful because at some point, the ‘Affirmitive Action’ engineers are gonna start building bridges.
correction: over a canal and shorter than the part over the road
“Workers at the scene told Local 10 News reporter Carlos Suarez that the bridge was undergoing some sort of stress test when it collapsed..” Top of page—direct link no longer works:
“Renderings showed a tall, off-center tower with cables attached to the walkway to support it. When the bridge collapsed, the main tower had not yet been installed, and it was unclear what the builders were using as temporary supports.”
We obviously need bridge control. When will the students walk out?
