Let's keep in mind that Rod Rosenstein wasn't even confirmed as Deputy AG until May. Between Sessions' recusal and Rosenstein's confirmation there was plenty of time for President Trump to put someone else in that Deputy AG told.
But he didn't. Not only that ... he refused to accept Rosenstein's resignation as U.S. Attorney for the Maryland District while all this was going on.
Clearly there is a lot more to this than what we've been led to believe.

The ways of Washington are not easy to decipher....and trying to out-think DJT is foolhardy.
