US President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, replacing him with the director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo.
Thanking Mr Tillerson for his service on Twitter, Mr Trump said the new state secretary would do "a fantastic job".
Mr Tillerson, a former chief executive of ExxonMobil, was only appointed to the job just over a year ago.
The president also nominated Gina Haspel to become the first woman director of the CIA.
The Department of State said Mr Tillerson had not spoken to the president and was "unaware of the reason" for his firing.
Under Secretary Steve Goldstein said: "The Secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security."

T Rex becomes extinct?
He must have been very displeased when PDJT made the announcement of meeting with NK as he was traveling out of country. This brings to mind how PT fired Comey when his office was temporarily empty of the Chief.
And a female as Director of CIA? Hired by a man who belittles women? He not only is draining the swamp, he might have called Roto Ruler to clean the lines.
Pardon the bad pun here.
“Looks/sounds like the SOS fingers in the Dyke’s are loosening up.”
BOOM
Its all over now!!!
Trust that Trump’s confidence is well placed.
Was Trumps confidence well placed for the last dozen who have been told to shove off?
I get it.
I wasn’t asking the question, I was responding to the poster who asked the question.
You don’t know if someone’s loyal or not until they’ve been tested.
I have confidence in our POTUS to DRAIN THE SWAMP!
FABULOUS!!! he needed firing!!~
But, many people think that when they work for someone they can do what they want.
I, when I was working, never felt that way. I always tried to do the best for the boss and carry out the mission that was my job.
T Rex becomes extinct? Too strong a word?
Maybe T Rex fulfilled his mission, but Trump found a better person to take that job. Wouldn’t be surprised if Trump told him he was needed for only a year. Who knows?
Trump shifts people around. Maybe PDJT figured he wanted Pompeo in at State from the beginning, but he needed his services immediately at the CIA where the Deep State was planning a coup.
Trump’s many books discuss his business deals and properties. The other half of being good in business is hiring (and firing) smart — which he doesn’t really talk about in his books.
So we’re seeing a side of Trump not known to the outside world, and we can safely assume this is how he operated at
the Trump organization.
All I know is that after shakeups occur, good things seem to happen!
All that matters to Trump — and WTP — is winning results. Not tired yet!
T Rex accomplished the task PT gave him. Just as POTUS ran his campaign to become POTUS, he uses the same strategy now. Choose the best to get something accomplished, move forward to the next step, disengage and choose another who would be best in that field. Once accomplished - rinse and repeat. This is possibly his greatest attribute: Knowing who would be the best person possible to get the job done. Increments, steps to the goal line. One plateau reached successfully and continue to the next.
Compare this to dance. We view DJT dance steps. He created his dance. His moves, timing, pattern and style. May not be a Fred Astaire, but more of a Busby Berkeley.
T Rex will be missed. It’s not often we have such a large personality on our team.
Yes, you nailed it. The responsibility is too great to have people hang around longer than they are needed.
I went back into Midas Touch, the book written jointly by Trump and Robert Kiyosaki.
And deep into the book Trump does talk about working with employees, partners, and making deals.
He says hiring employee is hit and miss. Someone you think has great qualifications is no good, but someone without is often "terrific". So you need to give the person a challenge and see what happens.
And then he wrote something very insightful:
I prefer doing deals with other people, but not having partnerships because they are too complicated and can eventually go bad. Deals are easier. You still have the relationship, but not the full baggage that a full partnership eventually requires.
Partnerships are like marriage. They can be wonderful, or terrible. If you can, stick to doing deals with people you like and trust. Then you can move on from there to your next deal.
